Chukars: Page 1
http://www.uplandjournal.com/chukars/index.html
Chukars are a pointing dogs delight. They covey in large numbers, hold well, and provide great singles and doubles shooting after a covey flush. Hunting these birds with a good pointing dog doubles the sport. I have Toby, a lemon and white English setter . We have hunted together for seven seasons now and we have learned the chukar business through on the job training.

The desire to chase this bird builds slowly over the course of spring, then summer. Little things trip the senses which in turn unleash the memories of past hunts. But by the end of summer when the first cool nights send a shiver down your back, it takes all the will a pa'tridge man has to concentrate on the task at hand.

That sweet, intense buzz that only happens when wingshooting upland birds. If I had any sense Id wait for at least a week to start chasing these brown bombers. Ill scratch a few birds down through the foliage more from luck than good shooting and thank God for a good retriever because the chances of finding a downed bird are practically nil. But Ive gotta be out therethe season is open! A branch over the spot) and begin the search. Site Designed in Patnership with Insyt New Media.

Tail Feathers & Trout: October 2011
http://tailfeathersandtrout.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
Tail Feathers and Trout. A DEDICATION TO GODS GREATEST CREATIONS, DUCKS, UPLAND BIRDS, AND WILD TROUT. Sunday, October 30, 2011. After spending the majority of my vacation and the early part of October chasing grouse around the aspen jungles of Wisconsin, I decided I was going to put a week long effort into chasing the large variety of fowl we have in our fine state. Last but not least, it was kind of exciting to have multiple chances on small flocks of Sea Ducks, I love the way they decoy, but not neces...
Ramblings of a Flatlander: October 2008
http://alexmetcalf.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html
Ramblings of a Flatlander. Thoughts and stories from life in. Monday, October 27, 2008. A bird shot behind us fell within Porter's zone of awareness and was quickly retrieved - I had to bring it back to the party that had shot it and apologize for my dog's over zealousness and greed. Not unusual. Another hen was busted up from along one of the water pipes; no point, no running, just bumped. Let that one fly, too. Links to this post. Wednesday, October 22, 2008. I’d never shot a sporting clay course...

Ramblings of a Flatlander: Urban trout
http://alexmetcalf.blogspot.com/2011/10/urban-trout.html
Ramblings of a Flatlander. Thoughts and stories from life in. Wednesday, October 5, 2011. I started under a bridge, walking by a recently abandoned motorcycle lying in the stream leaking god knows what. Second cast, fish. Hm. Ok. Not a lunker, but a solid little rainbow. Fought like hell. Looked beautiful. Maybe this will work? Oh yeah, baby! Took me almost to my backing. People pointing from the bridge. HA! I ignored the urge to think about the source of this and what else was in the water, besides trou...

While cautious, we're optimistic. What they did: the smaller ulcer was left alone as it was mostly healed and looked good. To address the larger one, they cut into his stomach, cleaned out food, grass, and some clotted blood. Through the stomach, they were unable to "cut out" the ulcer, but instead, sutured it sh...Could...

Uplandish | an upland shooting life
An upland shooting life. A Chukar for Jim. April 25, 2016. April 27, 2016. It was on that chukar hunt last season I decided to make it a point or almost nostrum to try to pluck all my game birds (unless too shot up) and leave the delicious flavor sealing skin intact so that it could arrive on my plate crispy and ready to devour like some Christmas gift that suspiciously resembled the top item on my list, and it is entirely Jim Harrison’s fault. What could I say? I opened the freezer and found Jim’s...

We are for the most part a solitary group, a minority if you wish, disciples of uncivilized places and wild birds.
