Food for Eco*logical Thought. History of food and agriculture. Urban agriculture & urban landscapes. Biodynamic Preps: why am I looking into these? December 19, 2014. Compost piles get hot from all the microbial activity. (image from Wikipedia). The initial scan of research projects focused on biodynamic compost indicates increased microbial activity and a higher retained soil carbon level. Good! If all the shrubs with more leaves are also all the shrubs that are downhill and therefore have moister soil,...

Shady Character: That Time I Did the Splits
http://shady-character.blogspot.com/2012/06/that-time-i-did-splits.html
Sunday, June 24, 2012. That Time I Did the Splits. Yesterday morning The Other Mark and I got together at the apiary and did splits. We had been discussing for a while whether we could or if we should even try. With the input of more experienced beekeepers we decided to go ahead and give it a try. What? You knew I was talking about beekeeping, didn’t you? 8230;and just jammed the cell into the middle of it maintaining the vertical orientation. Then, we placed the frames in their boxes and, in the case o...

Shady Character: Tommy Bound
http://shady-character.blogspot.com/2012/07/tommy-bound.html
Thursday, July 12, 2012. Tommy the San Marzano tomato. To remove suckers I just snap them off with my fingers if they’re small, or snip them with shears if they’ve gotten big and woody. Then the plant looks like this. The spot where the sucker was removed right in the middle. The second part of this equation is keeping the pruned vines up off the ground. Those wire tomato cages you see everywhere? Why go to all this effort? How do you grow your tomatoes? Do you prune and stake them? That looks like it wo...

Pondering the day | Have a big heart
https://haveabigheart.wordpress.com/2012/02/27/pondering-the-day
Have a big heart. Defining my world by following my heart. February 27, 2012. Today is my birthday. It has been very nice. People on Facebook are reminded of the day and wish me well. Old friends out of the blue call me up or e-mail me and surprise me with their thoughts of happiness. A simple gift of a piece of chocolate cake from my roommate. What could be better? Life is good. I am content. I get to do whatever I want. How many people in this world get to say that? This entry was posted in Adventure.

An Offal Experiment: Oyster Obsession Part 3: Liquor
http://anoffalexperiment.blogspot.com/2013/01/oyster-obsession-part-3-liquor.html
Monday, January 28, 2013. Oyster Obsession Part 3: Liquor. For the finale oyster post, we are exploring the liquor - that lovely salty bath that surrounds the meat, the essence of the ocean. As I removed the meat for the po' boys I drained the liquor into a separate bowl. It was destined for Korea's national dish, the subject of today's post: kimchi. The recipe is quite simple. I used my oyster liquor rather than fish sauce and the proportions are loose. Adjust to suit your own taste. 1/4 cup kosher salt.

An Offal Experiment: September 2012

Wednesday, September 26, 2012. What I remember the most though is how openly he loved us. His cards were always the corny floral ones with one on my mantle reading in his carpenter's print, I want to thank you for the treasure you have become to me. It's from several years ago but I pick it up and read it often. He was such a treasure to me. Eat on toast with cream cheese or butter. Shonagh explores the guts of food in An Offal Experiment. Links to this post. Saturday, September 22, 2012. Then late summe...
