urbanography - Chales Dickens' Commentary on the Five Points

http://www.urbanography.com/5_points/dickens.html

What is this dismal-fronted pile of bastard Egyptian, like an enchanter's palace in a melodrama! A famous prison, called The Tombs. Shall we go in? A man with keys appears, to show us round. A good-looking fellow, and, in his way, civil and obliging. Are those black doors the cells? Are they all full? Well, they're pretty nigh full, and that's a fact, and no two ways about it. Those at the bottom are unwholesome, surely? Why, we DO only put coloured people in 'em. Thats the truth. Sometimes, I suppose?

urbanography - Where "The Gangs" Lived--New York's Five Points District, by Gregory J. Christiano

http://www.urbanography.com/5_points/index.html

The name Five Points evokes images of poverty, rampant crime, decadence and despair. That’s true. The Five Points was a lurid geographical cancer filled with dilapidated and unlivable tenement houses, gang extortion, corrupt politicians, houses of ill-repute and drunkenness and gambling. This was a place where all manner of crime flourished, the residents terrorized and squalor prevailed. This is. The setting over many decades through the nineteenth century. Was ingrained in American culture. As to s...

The Urbanographer

Monday, December 23, 2013. Patented on July 28, 1914. On this day, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Location: 211 West 61st Street, New York, NY 10023, USA. Sunday, March 24, 2013. On Friday, I discovered this cigar box at one of my job sites, embedded in the cinder fill section of the roof slab and uncovered during our parapet replacement work. The building is located in Manhattan on Second Avenue and East 19th Street and was constructed in the 1920s. Featuring brickwork manufactured by Staples.

BLOG - OGRAPHY

My blog is an extension to my website. I display day to day photographs of my travels and experiences here. Friday, March 01, 2013. Filthy London . . . I was wondering past Charing Cross police station when a wagon full of riot police pulled up and emptied out onto the street and entered the station. I noticed a scrawl on the side of the van . . . Says it all really! Sunday, January 15, 2012. Fragile or Broken . . . It either starts fragile and testing or some of us just feel BROKEN! Especially as the v...

Historias Urbanas
