Prairie Artsters.com: January 2011
http://prairieartsters.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
An archive of art writings from across the prairies. Circa 2007 - 2012. Est. by Amy Fung. Saturday, January 29, 2011. Review: Hide/Seek, National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C. I should preface this by saying that a close friend of mine, Ted Kerr, had just studied with artist AA Bronson, who since December 16 has put out an ongoing request. To have his work, "Felix, June 5, 1994" removed from the exhibition, Hide/Seek: Desire and Difference in American Portraiture. A few days have passed since I view...

It Happened in Brooklyn: LOVE IS NOT A VICTORY MARCH
http://ilanamanaster.blogspot.com/2010/05/hallelujah.html
It Happened in Brooklyn. Monday, May 24, 2010. LOVE IS NOT A VICTORY MARCH. On Saturday night I heard a singer/songwriter cover "Hallelujah". I heard there was a secret chord. That David played and it pleased the Lord. But you don't really care for music do ya? I've heard the song many times in many iterations. There's the original Leonard Cohen version, of course, and the Jeff Buckley, which is phenomenal. I remember the song played over the final credits of Julian Schnabel's movie Basquiat.

It Happened in Brooklyn: October 2009
http://ilanamanaster.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html
It Happened in Brooklyn. Tuesday, October 27, 2009. A LETTER TO RAYMOND CARVER. Dear Mr. Carver. Still, still. To see how you let someone come in and control you, someone like GORDON LISH. Of all people, a buffoon, an ass-kisser, a self-promoter. Was he your maker? Or just your teacher? I know what it is to hear someone you don't know, someone who seems to be in possession of some power, say without reservations, "I believe in you.". Well, not without reservations. "I believe in you, but.". But even if y...

It Happened in Brooklyn: September 2010
http://ilanamanaster.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html
It Happened in Brooklyn. Wednesday, September 29, 2010. Last night I got into a friendly argument with one of my professors at an Irish bar on 108th Street. It's not a question of why should you read this," he said. Sounds boring," I said. "I'm pretty busy.". Nobody ever asked us. Whether or not something was helpful. Helpful? They said Read This. And we did.". Yes," he said. "Read Cervantes.". It's the first picaresque novel," offered one of my classmates. I've read a bunch of Shakespeare," I said.

It Happened in Brooklyn: THE PRODIGAL PRODIGY
http://ilanamanaster.blogspot.com/2008/02/prodigal-prodigy.html
It Happened in Brooklyn. Sunday, February 17, 2008. From a NY Times review. Of the Julian Schnabel retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1987:. These works suggest that Mr. Schnabel's primary gift may be very different from what it has been generally thought to be. In any case, the critics turned against him. Schadenfreude ruled. People wanted to see this cocky artist, this rock star; they wanted to see him disappear. And for awhile, he did. And then he started making movies. A movie abo...

It Happened in Brooklyn. Wednesday, May 26, 2010. SOMETIMES IT REALLY IS TOO LATE. Last night I went to a charity event at the Galapagos Art Space. With my friend Robin. We walked in blind, not knowing anything about the bands that were playing. The first band was Care Bears on Fire. Turned to me and sighed: "Well, I guess that's never going to happen for us. I guess we're never going to be 10th grade rock stars.". Care Bears on Fire:. Posted by Elka DePierre. Links to this post. Monday, May 24, 2010.

It Happened in Brooklyn: April 2009
http://ilanamanaster.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html
It Happened in Brooklyn. Thursday, April 30, 2009. THE WORTHY OPINIONS OF COCKDICK9. This is a quote from some people responding to this. Classical music youtube video:. If they are classically trained at the prestigious Juuilard, they should not play something like this, what a waste, way too commercial and showy, selling sex appeal. insulting the classical pianists in a way. Why can't classical musicians play something sexy. Music should reflect life. I strongly agree with you, Cockdick9. I've given my...
