Where's Miles: May 2013
http://wheresmiles.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html
Tuesday, May 21, 2013. I have done a fair amount of independent traveling over that past years. It has been a great adventure to face the unknown by myself. Traveling alone is a great way to make new friends along the way, and you get a sense of accomplishment and confidence you don't get from a team effort. But lately, the appeal of traveling alone has faded. At the moment, I feel confident and accomplished, and the adventure feels conquered. When would this particular opportunity ever arise again?

Where's Miles: May 2010
http://wheresmiles.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html
Tuesday, May 4, 2010. I have tossed around some ideas for places to go during my time off. One friend said she might go to Madagascar. That sounded intriguing. I still want to visit Japan. Now that I have some money saved up, I can consider trips to places with slightly larger price tags. But it occurs to me sometimes while I'm traveling, that I am flying so far from home to visit foreign countries, when I have never even really explored my own home country that extensively. Because of the economic meltd...

Where's Miles: Mawlamyine
http://wheresmiles.blogspot.com/2014/12/mawlamyine.html
Wednesday, December 24, 2014. Was an exceedingly pleasant visit. But I was excited to get to Dawei and start chilling out at the beach for a more extended, relaxed stay. But it turns out the transportation that direction was not super easy. We wanted to take a boat down the river to Mawlamyine. They gave us the good news that the boat would indeed float up at noon and would take us the four hour journey to Mawlamyine. This town was far more bustling and less charming than Hpa-An. It was kind of a cul...

Where's Miles: Community
http://wheresmiles.blogspot.com/2008/03/community.html
Monday, March 17, 2008. When I say town, there really isn't much of one. There are no roads other than the main road that circles the lake. There are a few brick or dirt walking paths that wind through the trees, and one just comes upon random places in the trees while exploring the paths. There is no central commercial strip like most towns have. Do you mean the nine year old on duty with a cleaning bucket? I did complain but he just wanted his keys back. Where's Miles: New Orleans
http://wheresmiles.blogspot.com/2012/04/new-orleans.html
Friday, March 23, 2012. After leaving Austin, I spent about a day and a half driving toward New Orleans. I made sure to pass through Lockhart, Texas. Although I had spent the past week and a half binging on Texas brisket already, Lockhart is widely considered the state's best BBQ. I stopped at Black's BBQ. A cafeteria style joint near the highway with a perpetual half hour line out the door. I wasn't too sure about camping in the van in the middle of town, so I looked up some motels on Yelp. That lived n...

Where's Miles: August 2014
http://wheresmiles.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Sunday, August 10, 2014. My Irish friend, Anthea, was heading for a close friend’s wedding outside Dublin this summer. After our successful road trip in California, I knew we made great travel partners and I was excited to tag along with her to check out Ireland and spend some more time with her. Anthea was keen to have me along and to show me around her country. She was interested in seeing some places she had never been, and taking me to some of her favorites. A very charming pub in the hills popular w...

Where's Miles: Myanmar
http://wheresmiles.blogspot.com/2011/12/myanmar.html
Friday, December 9, 2011. I really only became aware of Myanmar when I traveled to northwest Thailand several years ago. I was taking a bus toward Pai. One day, and as the bus got closer to the Myanmar border, it became clear to me that there was some tension there. Just as there are heightened patrols near the Southwestern US border with Mexico, it appeared that Thai authorities had to keep Burmese people from entering the country. The more I learned about the severe economic and political conditions.
