The Four Lakes | Pigasus

Detroit, South America 2014-2015. April 30, 2015. April 10, 2016. The rains have gone and winter chill is setting in. Up here in the high plains between Cusco and the Bolivian border the sound of the day is quiet. There’s only my tyres on the tarmac, the wind through the grasses, and the munch and complaint of ever-cross donkeys. Andyhuayllis Church – famed as the most beautiful in the Andes. Day one on the main road met six cyclists… here a Frenchie, English and Dutch. The lakes shimmer and not much mov...

Detroit, South America 2014-2015. May 28, 2015. April 10, 2016. Bolivia. Welcome to the party lands of a country with a left-leaning, human rights defending government. I bumped into Carlos and Samira. And their puppet show three times in one day. So when a few days later lolling in a roadside thermal bath, we met again in our underwear, fate was saying we should start riding together. End of the day smiles from Carlos and Samira, surveyed our perfect lakeside camp spot at Lake Titicaca. Band competition...

Detroit, South America 2014-2015. Uruguay, the final turn. May 13, 2016. May 14, 2016. After helping Ilse give a lesson to kids in Paysandu. Outside Resistencia lay the bird-famous Ibera wetlands. I saw heron, hawks, a stork with a snake, and bright yellow birds. There were cattle and horses up to their shoulders in waterways of lilies. Under the broad blue sky and through the grasses cowboys herded. Continue reading →. May 12, 2016. May 12, 2016. Continue reading →. May 10, 2016. Continue reading →.

Mairi and Mike around and about. Distrito Federal, Mexico. July 7, 2015. Where Denzel Washington runs about trying to avenge a cute little blond girl kidnapped by nasty drug lords, as well as remnants of American journalist voices shrieking about how dangerous it is to walk the streets after the dark. None of this was helped by American travellers we met in other parts of Latin America who looked at us like we were crazy that we were going anywhere other than Cancun. What’s not to love? Sunset at the park.

Detroit, South America 2014-2015. Here are the books and films that helped me understand the Americas. Detroit (April – July 2014). Libraries are an oasis. Going to the library was one of the first things I did in Detroit, and I continued going several times a week, every week, for my whole stay. By the time I left I knew half the staff, had learned to knit, and was volunteering as an adult literacy tutor. The Detroit Central Library knitting group: with great patience they taught me everything I know.

Kit List | Pigasus

Detroit, South America 2014-2015. When I set out I had not a clue what I was doing. So I plagiarised the kit list of a much more experienced tourer, the wonderful Emily Chappell. Because the obsession of the cycle tourist is keeping weight down, I was forever throwing things away; and after a year on the road, much of what remained was worn and broken. Any cyclist could write essays and essays on their kit – what worked, what didn’t – but here’s my top advice:. And buy the Reise. First of many bike build...

Detroit, South America 2014-2015. The Bolivian Coca Fields. May 28, 2015. April 5, 2016. Coca, laid out to dry. You see this all along the road, wherever there is flat space. Cycling alone through the Bolivian coca fields sounds dramatic. Scratch the surface and of course it isn’t. These Bolivian farmers are not teetering on the brink of delinquent criminality. No, that’s the bankers of Fulham using cocaine. You need to go West for the criminals. The start of the Road of Death. The steaming Yungas valleys.

Detroit, South America 2014-2015. August 7, 2015. October 6, 2015. The final push to Torotoro – 90km into the cobblestones. Oh, I wanted to cry! Because some Bolivian bureaucrat felt it wise to cobble 100km of road through the Bolivian midlands. That’s. By the time I slid from my bike on to a worn stoop in Torotoro, what remained of my backside was in serious pain. Even my bike looked worn and dejected. Immediately, a Korean tourist came up, beaming. You’re my hero! Said my self-pity . Exactly. September...
