VERMONT GARDENS: Daylily Color Begins

http://vermontgardens.blogspot.com/2009/06/daylily-color-begins.html

Always Growing Hardy Plants For Hardy Vermonters And Their Friends. Wednesday, June 17, 2009. Wednesday, June 17, 2009. Seeing a large clump by the side of the road suggests something that has probably been growing for over 50 years. The background foliage is from Dicentra. Gold Heart'. This is a mutation from the common bleeding heart and has been around since about1997. Someplace I read that it was found in England. The prices finally came down enough that Gail bought some to offer customers. Subscribe...

VERMONT GARDENS: Shade House on a Sunny Day

http://vermontgardens.blogspot.com/2009/04/shade-house-on-sunny-day.html

Always Growing Hardy Plants For Hardy Vermonters And Their Friends. Sunday, April 19, 2009. Shade House on a Sunny Day. Sunday, April 19, 2009. Yesterday was a cold, damp, sometimes drizzly day and today was sunny, bright and 56 degrees with a stable wind that never let me really get warmed up. Both days shared one goal: to erect the new 30 X 60 foot shade house. This is the third shade house we own and every one has been purchased from RIMOL. NH, 1-877-746-6544. RIMOL. On each pole and tomorrow. The pot...

VERMONT GARDENS: New Tomato To Try

http://vermontgardens.blogspot.com/2009/05/new-tomato-to-try.html

Always Growing Hardy Plants For Hardy Vermonters And Their Friends. Thursday, May 28, 2009. New Tomato To Try. Tuesday, May 28, 2009. I noticed that the stems were very strong, almost wiry and this might be attributed to the origin of the tomato said to come from the wild. This is important if planting in a windy area and is a must for a plant which reaches 9 feet tall. A web site with trollius offered- now in bloom here in Vermont! Labels: sweet raisin tomatoes. VERMONT GARDENS: Garden Fair

http://vermontgardens.blogspot.com/2009/05/garden-fair.html

Always Growing Hardy Plants For Hardy Vermonters And Their Friends. Saturday, May 16, 2009. Saturday, May 16, 2009. A dreary night here on the mountain. The fierce winds have subsided and the rain falls straight down with a drumming sound on the standing seam roof. The office window screen is filled with water and my vision to the outside has become cataract-like and limited. Oh for evening sunshine! The June issue of Downeast Magazine includes an ad for the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens Garden Fair.

Zone 4 Dirt Chronicles: March 2010

http://zone4dirtchronicles.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Zone 4 Dirt Chronicles. Monday, March 29, 2010. Yesterday, March 28, I moved the tomato and hollyhock seedlings to the greenhouse. On sunny days, it's warmer in there than in my house. On dreary days, not so much. But they'll sit on heating mats under florescent lights until the time comes for planting. No action from peppers and other flowers. Once again, I suspect old seeds may be the problem. I also planted lettuce in my hydroponic growing system. Pics to come if/when something grows. Another benefit ...

Zone 4 Dirt Chronicles. Wednesday, September 9, 2009. 2009 Grade - Just Average. Vegetable Garden is on the other side of her hill now. Thing is, I don't think she ever really hit a peak this year. Two thumbs up: Lettuce, chard, zucchini, basil, potatoes, peaches. Thumbs to come: butternut squash, peppers, cantaloupe. One thumb: cukes, green beans, asparsagus, corn. Thumbs down: beets, peas, soy beans, tomatoes, apples. So much time and sweat for a B-. Notes for next year:. Links to this post. Check out ...

Zone 4 Dirt Chronicles: Melt Down

http://zone4dirtchronicles.blogspot.com/2010/04/melt-down.html

Zone 4 Dirt Chronicles. Thursday, April 29, 2010. We ended up with around 15-18 inches of wet, heavy snow. Lots of big, broken white pine branches on the lawn. A big, uprooted white pine itself across the driveway. Bent birches. And a power outage for about 15 hours. Today, sun is shining. Thermometer reads 47. Snow is melting fast. Thankfully, the temps throughout the storm never dipped below 30 degrees, so the fruit trees shouldn't suffer any damage. Pruning for the white pines? Ferns Unfurling and Oth...

http://zone4dirtchronicles.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html

Zone 4 Dirt Chronicles. Sunday, May 31, 2009. Hens and Seeds Don't Mix. Last week of May = lots of rain. So they're staying in their pen until the garden is completely closed off. We have a fence but not a gate yet. I need to harden off my tomatoes, so they won't go in for a few days. Still to plant: hot peppers, basil, corn, and pole beans. I'm going to wait a week on the corn so the soil can heat up just a little more. Today, I'm heading up to Arcana Gardens and Greenhouse. Links to this post. I spent ...

Zone 4 Dirt Chronicles. Monday, May 3, 2010. Calm After the Storm. Five days ago: Snowstorm. Yesterday, 80 degrees. My bones say that winter is over. So. Onion bulbs in today. Basil sprouting in the greenhouse. Phlox and PJM rhody starting to bloom. Tomatoes VERY happy in the greenhouse. And it looks like I'll be picking an asparagus in the next day or two. Really, now. Zone 4 Dirt Chronicles: The Day the Birds Were Quiet

http://zone4dirtchronicles.blogspot.com/2010/04/i-didnt-hear-many-songbirds-chirping.html

Zone 4 Dirt Chronicles. Tuesday, April 27, 2010. The Day the Birds Were Quiet. I didn't hear many songbirds chirping this morning when I walked out to get the paper. Why? It was snowing big wet, heavy flakes. Yesterday, we admired the new lambs and piglets while hiking in 67-degree weather at Shelburne Farms. Today, we're homebound with at least six inches piled up outside. Worried about what this means for the apple blossoms, of course. Just knocked a bunch of snow off the peonies. I'm a Flatlander livi...

Zone 4 Dirt Chronicles. Saturday, August 29, 2009. Corn and Zucchini Salsa. Made this tasty little salsa with zucchini, corn, and peppers from the garden. Found it in. The Big Book of Preserving the Harvest,. Which suggests serving it with chips or grilled chicken breasts. I enjoy it in warm corn tortillas with black beans and a dollop of sour cream. Also dee-lish on a taco salad. Corn and Zucchini Salsa. 1 1/2 t salt. 2 ears yellow corn, husked. 4 T olive oil. 2 large tomatoes, seeded and chopped. After...
