Vertical Logic

Wednesday, September 16, 2015. The Utah 13ers are all located in the remote Uinta Mountains. Before this adventure I had never set foot in the High Uintas Wilderness. Jason Dorais and Lars Kjerengtroen a few weeks prior took down the FKT. On the roof of Utah, Kings Peak. They brought back some stoke on the Uintas. According to summitpost.org. From my naive position, this seemed completely reasonable. So we set plans into motion to test the theory. Group 1: Tokewanna Peak, "NW Wasatch" (aka "Mount Wapiti"...

Vertical Logic: February 2013

http://verticallogic.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

Saturday, February 16, 2013. ISMF World Championships Week. On Thursday 2/7 Dominique and I left Salt Lake City and flew to Torino, IT. We arrived Friday, despite a juggled itinerary and several lost bags. We spent the majority of the day in the Torino airport waiting for our bags and picking up other teammates. When everyone had arrived we stopped for lunch at a cafe in Torino and then set off for France. Having previewed the course the day before I felt confident on the descent. I gapped Andy a few...

Vertical Logic: August 2015

http://verticallogic.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, August 9, 2015. The Adirondack Great Range Traverse FKT. Breaking the radio silence on here. Hopefully I will do a better job in updating this journal going forward than I have recently. Much has happened that is noteworthy since my last post, but as is customary here is my report of a recent FKT attempt. Movescount GPS: http:/ www.movescount.com/moves/move72099143. Friday, July 31, 2015. Ran up Lone Peak from Jacob's Ladder on July 31, 2015. I left the car just after 6am in time trial mode. Reached the summit in 1:37:15 for a new ascent FKT (jogged down in 2:59:41 car-to-car). Movescount GPS: http:/ www.movescount.com/moves/move71113366. Strava: https:/ www.strava.com/activities/358100755/overview. Déjà vu this morning. Only faster this time! New Lone Peak ascent FKT 1:37:15 @lasportivana #foryourmountain. Legs are coming around nicely for #pushpeaks.

Mountains as I see them: Tetons- Nez Perce and Cloudveil Dome

Mountains as I see them. July 19, 2015. Tetons- Nez Perce and Cloudveil Dome. A shot of the type of weather this week. Grand and Owen soaring in the clouds-Courtesy Marcie Ambrose. I didn't take one so here is an image taken in the Winter of 2012 with Andy Dorais. Cloudveil Dome and the east ridge. From the top of Nez Perce- Mt. Buck in the background. Stupid self-portrait on Nez Perce. Looking at Middle and Grand Teton. From top of Cloudveil Dome looking east at Nez Perce Summit. A Taste of Chamonix.

Mountains as I see them. January 25, 2015. Whipple Couloir and Waldo Couloir- Combat Skiing. Why didn't we ski north-facing terrain? At the top of Neff's, we quickly found the enigmatic Whipple Couloir, guarded by steep east facing ramps and dry western walls. It looked remote and super aesthetic. While combat skiing for sure, it was amazing to ski these two magical lines. Even better was the company. Brothers, Jared eyeing Whipple. Aaron, not sure what he is looking at. Mountains as I see them. April 14, 2012. Skiing Middle Teton and Nez Perce April 2012. Winter's Last Grasping Moon- A Dorais. Like all journeys the past can often be the driver of many futuristic goals and experiences. I was only 13 when I first gazed at the mighty Teton. Range Feeling overwhelmed but drawn to them like all visiting ships are pulled to the Death Star, I knew someday I would climb them all. In 1990, some years later, Rick Sunderlage. That same day. Mountains as I see them: In the middle of somewhere

http://ambroseut.blogspot.com/2015/03/in-middle-of-somewhere.html

Mountains as I see them. March 7, 2015. In the middle of somewhere. Today, Jared and I rose to greet the morning sun in the warm Wasatch dawn, following a long-awaited storm that arrived and delivered earlier this week. South and west faces were zipper crusted, but north and eastern aspects graciously welcomed us. Couloir #1- Steep and straight. The Samurai letting the morning begin. This became our highway of access up. Couloir #2- Ramp skiing. Steep and choked entry from the top. Couloir #4- "S" Couloir.

Mountains as I see them. March 29, 2014. White Baldy and Lake Peak. As life passes ever so quickly, day to day activities become the essence of our existence. However, far too often our senses and emotions become dulled from the stresses of life. The occasional entry into an environment that is far greater than ourselves provides a unique perspective on life. Scott, West Ridge GWB. Scott enjoying the granite and verglass. Me moving along upper part of GW Baldy Ridge. Winter in the Wasatch!

Mountains as I see them. February 1, 2014. New Snow, Superior and Toledo. Last week's blue bird days are gone, at least for now and for good reason. 20" or so, right side up snow fell this week in the high mountains. This morning Lars and I headed for Superior with low visibility and blackness all around. We ran into a group friends led by Scott W as they were heading with great plans for Days Fork. The Viking enjoying icy winds and a narrow sidewalk. Arie on the upper apron, suffering in the deep.

Mountains as I see them. April 11, 2014. Dromedary and White Pine Couloir. This morning Jared, Louie (a writer and photographer) and I had an excellent steep tour along a couple sections of the Cottonwood Ridge. A side note- I had previously lost my pair of ski crampons. Jason, who recently started Skimo Co. Had just the crampons I needed. It is exciting to see a local business like this starting out strong and supplying exactly what we need. Keep at it Jason! Approaching summit via exposed ridgeline.

Mountains as I see them. June 6, 2015. The past few days have been really great. Amidst the many responsibilities of life, I have been able to escape to the hills and enjoy the changing season. And I, after not having skied together in a while, we were excited to be able to get two great ascents done together. The direct and then Geurts were wonderful, with stable rock, an impending rain storm and downclimbing both rappel sections. We topped out in on the South Summit in an icy rain. We had an en...Stowi...
