The tunnel's second main use was during the Second World War when almost the full length was fitted out for use as an air-raid shelter at a cost of £37,000. Seating was provided for up to 9,000 people as well as bunks for at least 500 overnight occupants. Use as a Waggonway. Use as a World War II Air-raid Shelter. There were never any horses or steam engines operating in the tunnel. There is a difference in height between the colliery site and the Quayside of 222ft which provides an average gradient of about 1 in 90, sufficient for the waggons to descend the tunnel under gravity. The Victoria Tunnel is an early Victorian Grade II listed structure built to transport coal to the River Tyne from a colliery at Spital Tongues, north west of Newcastle upon Tyne's town centre. As well as being used as a coal waggonway, it was also used as an air-raid shelter during World War II. This website has been compiled to explain a little of its history. Phil Thirkell April 2006.
