A not so “fameuse” apple | Victory Canning
https://victorycanning.wordpress.com/2014/10/11/a-not-so-fameuse-apple
Taking control of your food-one jar at a time. A not so “fameuse” apple. October 11, 2014. May 26, 2015. A couple of weeks ago, in anticipation of some apple canning recipes, I thought to myself-wouldn’t it be nice to find some lesser known apple to use? Cortland, Honey Crisp, Gala are all very well and good but what about an heirloom variety? The other apple-Snow (or Fameuse) is aptly named for its winter hardiness and its bright white flesh. It originated in France in the 1600’s and was broug...Create ...

Taking control of your food-one jar at a time. Well that was easy…. July 26, 2016. Waiting, waiting, patiently waiting…After 5 days, time to take the plunge…. 2 jars of new dills ready for the fridge. Had I put a little more salt, and been a little more patient, I would be looking at full on sour dills. But happy with the results of my first time crock fermentation. Look out sauerkraut here I come! What a crock…. July 21, 2016. Ramping up for the season. April 27, 2016. What a treat. I’ve never...Thankfu...

Taking control of your food-one jar at a time. August 9, 2014. Tired of the same ol’ grated yellow cheese topping for your tacos? Why not try curtido? What’s curtido you ask? Well, traditionally it’s a lightly fermented Latin American version not dissimilar to sauerkraut. It usually includes sliced cabbage, grated carrots and thinly sliced onions and is a favourite to add to pupusas-those diabolically tasty stuffy fried corn tortillas. A small farm just north of Cobourg. Well that was easy….

Taking control of your food-one jar at a time. July 25, 2014. May 26, 2015. The old-fashioned method of using pickling lime was generally a safe method of ensuring your pickles would stay crisp. But it was labourious, as it had to be washed off at least three or four times prior to pickling as the solution is rather alkaline which counteracts with the acidity of the vinegar. Alum (aluminum potassium sulfate). Was another additive used but now discarded as it sometimes left pickles tasting bitter. But wit...

Process, process, process…make, make, make…. Surely we are way beyond the mystique of ‘it just happens…”. While I love to see the art of the girl who creates perfect pencil crayon hair drawings, I would love to see what type of pencil crayons she uses or where she works, or the crazy expression on her face while she drinks her fourteenth energy drink while clutching a worn stub of a pencil crayon. Here then are a few of the things I look at, think, collect, and discuss that get me from here to there.
What is this Green Orb? | MonicaBee

What is this Green Orb? Posted by Monica Bodirsky. March 25, 2014. This sweater is blackso what is the green orb to the right of my necklace? Green orb still on sweater. Shot at a slightly different angle a few seconds later. The porcelain head is an antique from 1870, the old iron key is of unknown origin. The sweater, lens, and mannequin are all stain and smudge-free. I didn’t see anything unusual through the lens at the time of taking the pictures. No green glow here. Is the little boy head haunted?

Discards, odds and ends…. Posted by Monica Bodirsky. September 22, 2014. Stuff, lots of it…. Here in the studio I get to play with lots of stuff. Broken, discarded, old, battered, melted, wornsounds like how people can feel as well. Oh and that dapper little fellow up in the left corner? This old photo indicates the young gentleman’s name is Albert. Quite a dashing young fellow from history don’t you think? 3 thoughts on “ Discards, odds and ends…. September 22, 2014 at 5:00 pm. Animism Anyone? | MonicaBee
https://curiovitae.com/2014/05/13/animism-anyone
Posted by Monica Bodirsky. May 13, 2014. Does anyone out there believe that objects have a life of their own? Or am I all alone in this neo-pagan age being called woo woo queen? From my own experience with academia and anthropologists, I must conclude that the term animism is imposed primarily on Indigenous viewpoints and on anyone who doesn’t see a separation between spirit and material, or, those who feels that objects considered inanimate, such as rocks or plants have energy or spirit. I know that obj...

Posted by Monica Bodirsky. April 9, 2015. Abstract by Anda Kubis(l) and mixed media piece by Monica Bodirsky(r). The above picture speaks volumes to me. See that gorgeous abstract? It sold for $11,000 and was donated by Toronto artist and chair of the OCADU drawing and painting program Anda Kubis. See that little mixed media piece beside hers on the wall to the right? It was an adrenaline-filled blacktie affair, with a fantastic and seasoned Waddington’s auctioneer driving sales. What can I say? On Disca...

Posted by Monica Bodirsky. June 7, 2014. Antique soft porcelain (c. 1870 – 1890) and a couple of pieces of 40 year old coral. In a world where things don’t seem new enough, quick enough or ‘fresh’ enough, I am captivated by these antique German porcelain fragments. These little porcelain pieces were dug out of the ground after resting there as factory seconds and rejects for over 100 years. They weren’t good enough to paint and be sold on the market in the late 1800’s, and yet, the detail...I think there...

Taking control of your food-one jar at a time. June 25, 2015. June 25, 2015. Possibly the best strawberries I ever tasted were teeny tiny wild strawberries grown in the Apennines regions of Italy. Fragaria vesca, or Alpine strawberries, although miniature, pack a punch of intense flavour and sweetness. Delicious on their own or with balsamic vinegar, they also are delightful fermented in liqueur. Out with the old, in with the new. June 5, 2015. June 25, 2015. Start by slicing your pickles to about 1/8...
