How to get here. Umbria is known as 'the green heart of Italy', or 'Tuscany's gentler sister', and is the only landlocked region of the country. It is best known for its green hills, forests, wine-making country (Montepulciano and Orvieto are short drives from the house) and farming. The main cities in Umbria, all of which are worth visiting, are Perugia (the regional capital), Citta di Castello, Gubbio, Assisi, Spoleto, Orvieto, Bastia Umbra, Narni and Terni.

And Campo Felice, L'Aquila, in Umbria ( www.campofelice.it. The numbers for the LSC are limited to ten registered families to ensure everyone has a reasonable choice of weeks.
