Nov 24, 2009. Writers Need Love Too. The writer cannot—unless she is Thomas Pynchon—hide from the world after she has finished her writing. A writer must go out into her community and connect with others: writers, publishers, librarians, journalists, and readers. Especially when a writer is competing (I despise that word) with so many other books, she must be accessible. But I want to be an author so badly that I push through the anxiety. Of course, a nice glass of La Fin du Monde goes a long way to ...

Feb 23, 2010. I met Jason Pettus, founder of The Chicago Center for Literature and Photography. Recently, Jason became interested in how Twitter can be used as a publishing tool for short literary expressions. So he came up with the “TwitLit” experiment. What the project means to me? I was thrilled when Jason asked me to be a part of this project. In the past couple of years, I’ve been experimenting with short fiction. I want to see how much of a story I can tell in the least amount of word...8220;CCLaP ...

Jun 24, 2009. Gay Pride Open Mic Night. Last night, I had the pleasure of attending Women and Children First’s annual Gay Pride open mic night. Hosted by Chicago poet Gregg Shapiro. It was an evening of merriment, contemplation, and a bit of naughtiness. Began the evening with her rockin’, slam style, lesbian poetry. As a performer, Jenn P. was engaging, intimate, and energetic. I thought it would be difficult for the others to follow her brilliant performance. I was intrigued by Anne Laughlin. But I was...

Friday, March 25, 2011. I worked my first shift in the AV department on Sunday afternoon and really enjoyed the change. It was interesting trying to search for movies instead of books. I realized that it is most effective to search for movies using actor and/or director keywords instead of titles because so many movies have one word titles, duplicate titles or unusual spellings. Looking for a television series was even more unusual- especially since I didn't realize that Dr. Who originally. I couldn't fi...

Sunday, May 1, 2011. I helped with Marble Madness on the first Tuesday evening I didn't work the desk (the 26 th. It was hilarious. There were only two kids there (it was for ages 10-14) and they were probably only about twelve. One of them talked. The. entire. time. But they were fun. We went out to the stairwell and made a marble run using nothing but paper and tape. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Okie in the city. The Red Star Journals.

Jul 21, 2009. Sadie Rose (part one of short story). I am nothing. I am invisible . Hold onto what you believe, Francis. Look at me. Five foot, four inches of one hundred and thirty pounds of insubstantiality. Nearly eighteen years old and I just don’t believe anything anymore. No, you don’t know anything because you’re out there finding yourself. Without me. Fuck you. Remember when we were best friends? You were my big brother, my protector, my guardian. Remember when we lived out in the country? No one ...

Thursday, June 28, 2012. One of my favorite things is a mystery. When a patron can't remember the title, main character and author of a story it requires my favorite librarian skills. True, I get a lot of help from google and amazon, but it's a great feeling when a face breaks into a smile- "That's what I was thinking! Almost like magic with me as a good fairy granting a wish. I asked what the series was about - a mouse- how cute- and went to my trusty friend google: "germento the mouse". I love this job.

Thursday, June 28, 2012. Everyone is beautiful after a workout. Before, we're jumpy, hot, jostling gear and the sticky tiredness of daily stress. You can almost hear the internal cycle: monotonous lists of other things to be done- reasons to work out- what I hate about my body- reasons to work out- important tasks waiting. No matter how old I feel, how fat, how tired. If I look around, every face shows a peace that has been earned, every muscle a grace that has been given. View my complete profile.
