Leeuwin Current Birding: May 2014

http://wabirdingblog.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

Saturday, May 17, 2014. Albany Pelagic Trip Report - 4 May 2014. This trip was another excellent trip, following on from the Sunday trip. 13 tubenose species were recorded, highlighted by more excellent views of Black-bellied Storm-Petrels. A dark intermediate morph Soft-plumaged Petrel. And large numbers of Little Shearwaters. Two South Polar Skuas. Were also seen on the return journey, unfortunately views were again rather brief and distant, and several Arctic Terns. Photo courtesy Bernie OKeefe. And p...

Leeuwin Current Birding: September 2014

http://wabirdingblog.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Tuesday, September 2, 2014. The curious case of the Red-bellied Spinipig. NB: The following should be prefaced - in the manner of any modern climate debate - with “…I’m not a taxonomic scientist, BUT…”. In a rather left-field move, HBW/BirdlLife have thus resplit the Pilbara’s “Rufous-bellied Spinifex Pigeon” (or spinipig as the locals call them) Geophaps ferruginea. Which compared to nominate plumifera. Now White-bellied Spinifex Pigeon), is:. Generally redder [ ferruginea. Plume slightly shorter [3].

http://wabirdingblog.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Friday, February 20, 2015. Albany Pelagic Trip Report - 8 February 2015. This was also an interesting trip, with a reasonable variety of seabirds, though most species were the same as the previous day’s trip. 11 tubenose species were recorded, along with several skua and tern species. The highlights were more Sooty Terns. And several close passes from a Wandering. Wandering-type Albatross, suspected Gibson’s D. Photo courtesy Plaxy Barratt. And a brief visit by a small group of Orcas. Arctic Tern. Photo courtesy Dan Mantle. We again departed early at 0510, and made our way across King George Sound and through the heads in darkness. Some extra cloud cover to the east meant that we were even furth...

Leeuwin Current Birding: New almost-endemic species for WA: Western Whistler

http://wabirdingblog.blogspot.com/2015/01/new-almost-endemic-species-for-wa.html

Saturday, January 31, 2015. New almost-endemic species for WA: Western Whistler. WA gained a surprise almost-. Endemic species recently when the south-western forms of Golden Whistler were split by the IOC (on Dec 31) as the full species Western Whistler Pachycephala occidentalis. Western Whistler Pachycephala occidentalis. Adult male at Wungong Gorge near Perth. One each on Lord Howe and Norfolk islands (the IOC currently notes ‘Norfolk Whistler’ xanthoprocta. Blame the propellerheads...: Finch Update 21-02-2014

http://gjhmac.blogspot.com/2014/02/finch-update-21-02-2014.html

Friday, February 21, 2014. I lifted the lid on the Gouldian nest in the aviary today to check how the recently hatched chicks are going. We have five healthy looking youngsters (and one unhatched egg). Is there a possibility the 6th may hatch shortly or is that it? 11:02 am, March 07, 2014. I think that will be it. Not sure if the sixth egg was fertilised. To be honest Im not sure what Ill do with five of them, let alone six! 9:57 pm, March 09, 2014. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). I run on this stuff.

Blame the propellerheads...: Finch Update 14-02-2014

http://gjhmac.blogspot.com/2014/02/finch-update-14-02-2014.html

Friday, February 14, 2014. When I fed and watered the finches in the main aviary this evening I noticed that both of the Gouldian Finches. Were inside their nesting box. Thinking I'd better check if everything is ok, I climbed inside the aviary. To my surprise I discovered that some (possibly all, it's a bit hard to see everything in there) of the eggs have hatched! Blame the propellerheads...: Finch Update 02-10-2014

http://gjhmac.blogspot.com/2014/10/finch-update-02-10-2014.html

Thursday, October 02, 2014. A fair bit has happened in the last few months (I have been particularly slack in updating this blog):. The fawn Zebra Finches have bred, five young hatched and three have survived (goes to show that even a Zebra Finch with a busted wing can still father a healthy brood);. The Gouldian Finches bred again, raising a single offspring (this is the fourth brood for the season);. The Painted Finches have bred, 3 have hatched, have left the nest and are doing very well.

The Cuckoo's Nest: Esperance in December

http://birdinginwesternaustralia.blogspot.com/2015/12/esperance-in-december.html

A blog about my birding adventures and observations in my home state of Western Australia. Saturday, 19 December 2015. On a recent trip to Esperance on Western Australia's south coast, I was able to spend a bit of time birding. We went via Kalgoorlie to break up the nine hour drive and stayed a night there. In the early hours of the morning I drove out of Kal to the Kurrawang Nature Reserve. This yielded very little - just a couple of White-fronted Honeyeaters. Cape Barren Goose, Esperance Golf Course.

Blame the propellerheads...: Finch Update 06-06-2014

http://gjhmac.blogspot.com/2014/06/finch-update-06-06-2014.html

Friday, June 06, 2014. The two Gouldian Finches. From the second clutch have had their coloured bands added. I'm adding these bands and recording the details in a spreadsheet to try and ensure I don't inbreed. I expect the third clutch of eggs to hatch any day. The most recent addition to the aviaries is a pair of Double-barred Finches. Zebra Finch (charcoal) with eye infection (after a few days of treatment). UPDATE: Unfortunately this finch died after it was returned to the aviary. I run on this stuff.

Blame the propellerheads...: Finch Update 28-10-2014

http://gjhmac.blogspot.com/2014/10/finch-update-28-10-2014.html

Tuesday, October 28, 2014. Unfortunately one of the three new Painted Finches. Mentioned in the previous post has died - causes unknown. The remaining two are doing well and the parents are apparently breeding again. After a number of failed attempts to keep a pair of Star Finches. I have admitted defeat and sent my remaining male Star Finch to a finch keeper who has success in keeping the species. I think my aviaries may be too draughty? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). I run on this stuff.
