Wandering Turkey

Time stands still in paradise. July 23, 2015. July 23, 2015. All along the coast. My few days in Fethiye were great, but it was time to move on. Antalya was the last coastal city before I would head inland to the fairy chimneys of Cappadocio. I opted for the coastal road by bus between Fethiye and Antalya, which meant a 7,5 hour bus ride on the edge of cliffs dropping into the clear blue waters; hairpin turns managed with … Continue reading All along the coast. Time stands still in paradise – Wandering Turkey

https://wanderingturkey.wordpress.com/2015/07/23/time-stands-still-in-paradise

Time stands still in paradise. I’ve heard it’s the highlight of Turkey. The jewel many flock to to get lost in, bedazzled by its beauty. Natural structures creating a surreal landscape you forget that you are supposed to have a life outside, responsibilities. It captures the mind and soul and then sets it free – a lot lighter than when you first came in. Such a place is Göreme , Cappadocio. I arrived in the small town of Göreme in the wakening hours of the day after taking the (very long nine hour).

And into the sea she shall go – Wandering Turkey

https://wanderingturkey.wordpress.com/2015/07/08/and-into-the-sea-she-shall-go

And into the sea she shall go. The sea has a calming effect. I don’t even have to actually swim in it, just be near it for me to be able t clear my mind, relax and switch off, just listening to the waves. That is when you are sitting on a beach and playing with sand between your toes. This, however, was slightly different. Gert-Jan and I decided to stay in Dalyan another day and do a 12 Islands whole day boat trip. Something, to be honest, I probably wouldn’t have done on my own. The swim stops were my a...

Back to benches in bus stations – Wandering Turkey

Back to benches in bus stations. 8220;Tonight is our last dinner together,” he said so matter-of-factly that I thought he was making a joke with this sudden remark over our Indian dinner. 8220;Oh, really? And where are you off to? 8221; I played along, still not realising that he’s serious with that half-smile on his face. After grasping at several reasons trying to explain why he’s bailing, Gert-Jan made up his mind on going back to The Netherlands the next morning. But telling me the night before?

Missing turtles and hot mud – Wandering Turkey

https://wanderingturkey.wordpress.com/2015/07/06/missing-turtles-and-hot-mud

Missing turtles and hot mud. Dalyan is a pretty town along a riverbank – throw in some groups of foreign visitors, a busy shopping street that lights up at night, and random live music from corner restaurants, and you have a perfect tourist town. The area is also known for its turtle conservation area by the lagoon. Apparently the waters are teeming with turtles , of which I have only seen a wrinkled old head for a brief moment. Still not sure if it was Donatello or Michaelangelo. July 6, 2015. Leave a R...

Cobble stone paths and grey stone walls – Wandering Turkey

https://wanderingturkey.wordpress.com/2015/07/13/cobble-stone-paths-and-grey-stone-walls

Cobble stone paths and grey stone walls. Walking along cobble stone paths among ruins of decades old with a history of centuries old, always takes me back in time. I can walk among ruins for hours and imagine the life that was once lived there. Because of rumours that the Greeks poisoned the water-rich wells, the few Turks who were farming in the valley, were against moving into the abandoned village. Throughout the decades it became a town of ruin: crumbling grey walls with hints of colour on some walls...

Wandering Turnip | thoughts about teaching, writing, technology…

Thoughts about teaching, writing, technology…. November 11, 2010. So I asked a couple of my fifth grade students what exactly they like to read, or what kinds of things to they want to read. These are struggling readers, and I fully expected blank stares from them. But…here’s what they said:. Magic Tree House Books. Which one of my students said is “adventure and mystery all in one”).
