I am a writer. I’ve been a writer for a long time. As long as I can remember, really. I’ve written short stories and articles and essays, and even a (possibly) terrible young adult novel. Every day I think about writing, but don’t write. I imagine myself re-writing the badly written young adult novel, but don’t ever do it. I create intricate plots and sub-plots while I’m in the shower for stories that never get out of my head and onto the page. Today, I am not a person who wants to write. I am a writer.

I am a writer. I sat in the dark on my 40th birthday and cried because I have so many goals and dreams and I’ve accomplished exactly nothing. Well, not nothing. I do have three great kids and a lovely family. But I want more. I’m done making excuses for myself and ready to get back to the keyboard. After feeling rejected after my first novel was, well,. Enfin, in tegenstelling tot de vijf minuten durende bevruchting (van horen en zeggen), ging de bevalling een stuk moeizamer. Met de navelstreng twee keer om nek geslagen, kwam ik vlak voor de uitgang klem te zitten. Dit tot grote ergernis van mijn moeder. Gelukkig wist de verloskundige mij op kordate en professionele wijze levend uit het lichaam van mijn moeder te trekken. Zelfmoordneigingen heb ik sindsdien niet meer gehad.
