Japan 2001

Ed Ward's journal of a three-week trip to Japan in September, 2001. View my complete profile. Sunday, September 21, 2008. And if it seems familiar to you, it did, for a short while, exist on a website designed and published by my late friend, Bob Watts, who died this January. Even seven years ago, he designed a much more elegant presentation than this text is getting now, but Blogger is easy and free, so that's what I'm using. Would I go back to Japan? Coca-Cola no longer makes Water Salad, for one thing.

Japan 2001: Sept. 8: Ogaki, Gifu

http://wardjapan2001.blogspot.com/2008/09/sept-8-ogaki-gifu.html

Ed Ward's journal of a three-week trip to Japan in September, 2001. View my complete profile. Sunday, September 21, 2008. Sept 8: Ogaki, Gifu. Was it hot this morning? And where are the parents in stories like this? Then there were two teenage girls visiting the site of the ‘98 Winter Olympics, doing their own oohing and aahing, and a report on exotic animal smuggling on the Vietnam-China border. The night landscape of Gifu was so much like America, with its neon and chain restaurants and stores that it ...

Japan 2001: Sept. 10: Takayama, Kanazawa

http://wardjapan2001.blogspot.com/2008/09/sept-10-takayama-kanazawa.html

Ed Ward's journal of a three-week trip to Japan in September, 2001. View my complete profile. Sunday, September 21, 2008. Sept 10: Takayama, Kanazawa. I later found a slime trail down my t-shirt, which must have gotten there from an ill-aimed jab of the sticks. There was still a lot of time left before I had to grab my bags and head to the station, so I headed back to Sannomachi, where, not being desperate and hungry, I took things much slower. Certainly other kinds of giant businesses have imposed thems...

Ed Ward's journal of a three-week trip to Japan in September, 2001. View my complete profile. Sunday, September 21, 2008. So the first thing I did when I checked in at the Best Western was ask about a cash machine. There was one across the street. I went over there and.the bank was closed, but the machines in the part that was open sure didn’t look useable. I asked again and received a map, on which the desk clerk indicated a couple which she thought would work. The little box guy. Frustration back at th...

Ed Ward's journal of a three-week trip to Japan in September, 2001. View my complete profile. Sunday, September 21, 2008. Up in the morning and.straight to the vending machines. I’ve been on the lookout for a product called Water Salad, and bought a can of something I thought might be it, then followed with two cans of Coffee Jack Blue Mountain Blend. Blue Mountain coffee from a vending machine? But it did the trick. The other stuff turned out to be a very good V-8 kind of thing.

Ed Ward's journal of a three-week trip to Japan in September, 2001. View my complete profile. Sunday, September 21, 2008. Not that I needed a whole lot of reminding. If the confusion trying to exchange my voucher for a rail pass and the subsequent buying and using of a telephone card wasn’t enough, there were other sights - pagodas, a monorail in Chiba, the Right-On sporting goods store - to hint at it. Carl, me, and some poor guy advertising something at Shinjuku Station. We went for the latter. It ...

BerlinBites: More History Gone

http://berlinbites.blogspot.com/2007/03/more-history-gone.html

Monday, March 05, 2007. There it goes: another piece of Berlin history is biting the dust. That's right, folks: by the time I get back from the States, the Tränenpalast will be no more. Apparently Deutsche Bahn has decided that this memory of the old East-West border has to be demolished immediately, the easier to excise the memory of what the building used to be. Once Upon a Time in the East. Detailing the wacky fun he and his friends had had travelling in the East Bloc before the Wall came down, eating...

http://berlinbites.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html

Friday, May 30, 2008. Way Ta Go, Weltstadt! Over the weekend, I ran into a couple of old friends, and among the info I picked up was a rumor that the plug was about to be pulled on Radio Multikulti. Berlin's absolutely unique radio station. Further research turned up an article. Now, I'm in a bad position to defend Radio Multikulti for a number of reasons. First, I never listen to it. I never listen to. Anyway, I'm glad to be leaving. At the rate this city is self-destructing, I can see myself coming...

BerlinBites: Immer Ein Koffer

http://berlinbites.blogspot.com/2008/12/immer-ein-koffer.html

Tuesday, December 09, 2008. I left Berlin twice. It might seem like I couldn't let myself leave, but the answer is more prosaic than that: I missed a turnoff. Actually, I hadn't meant to leave so late in the day, but the movers had decided, while I was picking up the rental station wagon that would take the more precious items, that their truck was full, although it was far from it. I returned to find them battening the load down, and went upstairs to my apartment to see how much remained: a lot. Another...

BerlinBites: Going Like 60

http://berlinbites.blogspot.com/2008/11/going-like-60.html

Monday, November 03, 2008. Sometime over the past few hours, I turned 60. Actually, although I know my time of birth, I'm not sure exactly when the moment came: the U.S. was doing Daylight Savings Time, so where did that moment go? The number is shocking enough; even more shocking was the realization the other day that I've spent 25% of my life (my life. I hasten to add) in this city. And now I'm leaving. For those of you who may be anticipating moving, incidentally, I found a great resource: MyHammer.

Monday, November 10, 2008. Last Crumbs From Berlin. As far as I can see it, there's one more, valedictory, post left to this blog before I close it down and start the one from France in a few weeks. But I've been collecting a few tidbits here and there I've been meaning to post, so here is a roundup. And probably will until the generation that's never known it outnumbers the one that does. What's the favorite cigarette in your part of town? According to The Organized Crime Corruption and Reporting Project.

BerlinBites: Long-Awaited Announcement

http://berlinbites.blogspot.com/2008/10/long-awaited-announcement.html

Monday, October 20, 2008. This morning at 11:30 I signed a lease agreement with a landlord for a 55-square-meter apartment in Montpellier. The agreement goes into effect on November 1, although since my 60th birthday is Nov. 2 and I've celebrated 40 and 50 in Berlin, and want to say au revoir to my friends, I won't move in on that date. I don't watch television at all, and never have! That's what I'm about to do. As for the cyber-friends, I'll try to get the new blog up quickly, and put a pointer here so...

BerlinBites: PostKomm '08

http://berlinbites.blogspot.com/2008/10/postkomm-08.html

Saturday, October 11, 2008. Sorry about the protracted absence; things have been just a bit nuts around here. Some of it, which involved getting a ghost-writing deal for a book finalized, isn't of much interest. And, when I finally got that settled, along came Popkomm again. Be held, if not: Kongreshalle am Alexanderplatz? We were just flabbergasted. One of our people speaks excellent German and really laid into the guy. Wonder if he'll have his job when this thing is over.". Quick, we have to call!
