Today in Afghanistan

Successor to Today in Iraq. Monday, August 10, 2015. Update for Monday, August 10, 2015. In an address to the nation, President Ghani blames Pakistan for harboring the insurgency. And says that the recent attacks in Kabul are a "game changer." He says that Pakistan cannot simultaneously broker peace talks while harboring the Afghan Taliban and that relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have come to a critical point. Obviously, Afghanistan is in no position to confront Pakistan militarily. It is ...

Today in Iraq and Afghanistan. Successor to Today in Iraq. Saturday, August 29, 2015. Update for Saturday, August 29, 2015. I'm just going to focus on one issue today, but it's an important one. http://warnewstoday.blogspot.com/2015/07/update-for-wednesday-july-29-2015.html

Today in Iraq and Afghanistan. Successor to Today in Iraq. Wednesday, July 29, 2015. Update for Wednesday, July 29, 2015. There is more to the story of the apparent death of Mullah Omar than we yet know. Afghan intelligence officials say he died in a Karachi hospital. As the Taliban has been fracturing, many have wondered why Omar did not make any public appearances, although statements have been issued in his name. The Taliban are continuing to deny that he is dead. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Today in Iraq and Afghanistan: A must read

http://warnewstoday.blogspot.com/2015/05/a-must-read.html

Today in Iraq and Afghanistan. Successor to Today in Iraq. Wednesday, May 20, 2015. His main point is to put much of the blame for violent Islamic radicalism on the Saudi royal family, but he doesn't spare the U.S. either. I recommend you read the whole thing (I don't otherwise recommend the Puffington Host), but here are a couple of important paragraphs. Not going to happen I fear. I'm sensing Obama would like to, but he knows it's politically impossible. Phoenix Training and Placement. A Star from Mosul.

Windham County: October 2014

http://windhamcounty.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Observations from the last quiet corner. Sunday, October 19, 2014. Darn, it keeps happening. First, I went down to the Highland Festival and it turned out it was fifteen bucks admission. I thought that was excessive since once you get in you're going to spend money on haggis and bagpipe lessons and whatever, so I passed. But I did have a pleasant walk down country lanes with the beech leaves turning yellow. Sunday, October 12, 2014. What's in a name? Because the name of the town is Scotland.

Windham County: Couldn't go to work today . . .

http://windhamcounty.blogspot.com/2016/04/couldnt-go-to-work-today.html

Observations from the last quiet corner. Friday, April 22, 2016. Couldn't go to work today . . . I can hear a tractor working the cornfield down the street, I assume spreading manure at this date. The meadow is full of wildflowers - blue, white and yellow. The birds are positively symphonic. After a mild winter, the squirrels are positively obese. It's disgusting. Some of the birches are starting to leaf out, as are my fruit trees. Will the forest regime change? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

It is also 36 degrees above the normal high temperature for the date. The following day also set a high temperature record. Sunday, March 6, 2016.

Windham County: I'm back

http://windhamcounty.blogspot.com/2016/11/im-back.html

Observations from the last quiet corner. Sunday, November 20, 2016. Not sure why it's been so hard for me to keep up this diary. Of course I have my other two blogs and my gainful employment consists largely of writing, so maybe I just haven't had enough energy to channel into it. But I have decided that the discipline will be good for me. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Update for Thursday, March 9, 2017. Okay, so why Trumpcare? The New Dharma Bums. Simple theme. She also has a reverse mortgage, which means that if we sell the house she won't have enough money to last very many years in assisted living. So she's sitting around in an early 19th Century farmhouse with five bedrooms, just her and the cat. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Update for Thursday, March 9, 2017. Okay, so why Trumpcare? Observations from the last quiet corner. Monday, December 26, 2016. The wisdom of Solomon. I can't be too specific about the tale I am about to tell, because there is pending litigation and the parties are actually following social media to harvest evidence. Windham County: September 2014

http://windhamcounty.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Observations from the last quiet corner. Sunday, September 7, 2014. That's what many people imagine to be the essence of country life. Well, it depends. I lived most of my adult life in the city and yes, there's traffic noise during the day and you'll hear people talking loudly or yelling. Sometimes people have their domestic quarrels on the sidewalk. You'll hear sirens a couple of times per hour. Wednesday, September 3, 2014. But I got to thinking. They use a tremendous amount of energy - they don't...

Windham County: February 2016

http://windhamcounty.blogspot.com/2016_02_01_archive.html

Observations from the last quiet corner. Saturday, February 27, 2016. Miracles of modern technology. In case I haven't mentioned it, I live out here amongst the idiocy of rural life*, but I work in the city, in Providence specifically. They make me park about six miles from my office which gives me a couple of nice walks each day. My path takes me through a whole lot of vacant land resulting from the relocation of a stretch of interstate highway, which has been gradually undergoing transformation. Actual...
