Last year I was bumped into several freshly emerged Nepogomphus walli. Specimens when checking the slopes on the south side of Pia Oac mountain on 23 June and again on 8 July. I was happy that this year I found an immature male to the northwest of the mountain, but also in Cao Bang Province, about 60km from the previous location, on June 18.

An earlier post on butterflying around Malala Lodge. In the morning we went on an estuary cruise which focuses on hippos and crocodiles as well as the larger birds. It was a very enjoyable trip and we saw plenty of crocodiles and hippos and quite a few birds – though nothing new for me. With a Grey Heron.

The Yen Bai area is a true treasure trove for Aeshnids in early summer. Several species of Planaeschna. Karuki Karube had alerted me to the occurrence of a large Periaeschna. But it just seemed very bulky. Later at home the difference between this specimen and normal P. magdalena. And a possible species novum. At 76mm this is a large insect!
