I have played with using stencils in my watercolours particularly when making abstract backgrounds. I don't find it easy to add watercolour as it seems to always run under the stencil and not give the desired result. You can add a thicker mixture with dabbing through the stencil but I prefer to lift out pigment through the stencil using a Magic Eraser.
