The local Omorgus species are black to a dark brown, thickset and grow to around 1.5 cm (over 1/2") in length. They are commonly attracted by house lights and can usually be found helpless on their backs below lighted windows. Nevertheless, the smell of carrion on a gentle breeze will bring numbers on a calm night. Labels: Insects - Beetles.

For silent flight, owls have a comb-like structure on the front edge of their wings (see enlarged photo above), the feathers are tightly interwoven with fine soft plume filaments, as they are along their trailing edges. Although these birds look quite large when perched in a tree (enhanced by their light coloring), they are only around 35 cm (14") in length.

As far as I can tell, all the above are the same species, comprising a mixture of immature and adults. The largest one above (around 10 cm or 4” in length) is feeding on a rival and was kindly identified by the Australian Museum as Cormocephalus westwoodi. So presumably so are the others.
