Spicebush Log: Bug-Sized Peepers
http://spicebush.blogspot.com/2015/07/bug-sized-peepers.html
Saturday, July 18, 2015. Spring peepers are small and loud. In spring, a chorus of high-pitched calls from dozens or hundreds of peepers emanate from every wetland, but they are nearly impossible to see. Adult male peepers defend breeding territories of just 4 to 16 inches in diameter- a good indicator of their small size. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Ellensnyder1 AT gmail.com. Spicebush Log: June 2014
http://spicebush.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Sunday, June 22, 2014. A Lovely, if Chilly, Start to Summer on Mt. Eisenhower. At 6:50 am yesterday- the summer solstice- the temperature on top of Mt. Washington was 33 F. We finished packing for our day hike to 4,760-foot Mt. Eisenhower via Edmands Path, adding a winter hat and gloves after seeing the forecast of gusty winds and cooler than normal temperatures forecast for the first day of summer in the high summits. One of my favorite parts of hiking to Mt. Eisenhower is taking the 1.0 mile lo...It ra...

Spicebush Log: September 2014
http://spicebush.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Tuesday, September 30, 2014. On Sunday we hiked the Baldfaces: Baldface Knob, South Baldface, and North Baldface. The colors were glorious, the trails not too crowded, and the air was warm, actually a little too warm. We were parched by the end of our 10.5 mile hike, drinking nearly every drop of water that we carried. Along the upper part of the Slippery Brook Trail,. Lined with colorful hardwoods and hobblebush. From Baldface Knob looking south to Eastman Mountain. On the way to South Baldface. The vie...

Spicebush Log: Four Peepers and a Bear Scat
http://spicebush.blogspot.com/2015/07/four-peepers-and-bear-scat.html
Sunday, July 19, 2015. Four Peepers and a Bear Scat. A few times each year we think about moving, to find a smaller house to clean and heat, a shorter driveway to clear of snow, less yard to care for, and where we could walk to a store or the library. These thoughts usually last about an hour or two. In that span of time we remember all the reasons we'd rather not move, at least now yet. Okay, not the best transition from the lovely collection of fresh vegetables, but I'm interested in animal droppings t...

Spicebush Log: July 2014
http://spicebush.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Monday, July 28, 2014. Then we think about the good parts of living out of town, which, so far, have convinced us to stay put: the quiet road, nearby open spaces, dark night skies, and our yard, including all the plants and animals that we share it with. These guys are adorable and I take great pleasure in knowing they live in our yard. Our animal community is diverse and beautiful, including this lovely female goldenrod (crab) spider on a purple coneflower. Tuesday, July 22, 2014. I collected and will e...

Spicebush Log: November 2014
http://spicebush.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Thursday, November 27, 2014. Monday, November 24, 2014. A Season for Sage. Sage is my favorite garden perennial. I have 4 or 5 or them- Salvia officinalis. Says let it all be. It's good for the plants and the animals. So now I enjoy the perennial beds year-round, and especially in fall before the snow covers it all in white. Milkweed pods open and spread their seeds to the wind,. Carried aloft by a tuft of silky hairs. A spent coneflower, dry and faded, offers seeds to birds. Thursday, November 13, 2014.

Spicebush Log: Garlic Harvest 2015
http://spicebush.blogspot.com/2015/08/garlic-harvest-2015.html
Sunday, August 2, 2015. Last weekend we harvested our garlic crop at my parents homestead. We've lost count how many years now that we've been growing garlic….but every October we plant nearly 500 bulbs and every July we pull nearly the same number out of the ground. My sister Amy and my nephew-in-law Sid from India pulling this year's garlic crop. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Ellensnyder1 AT gmail.com. Molas, Humpbacks, and Sharks! Mt Chocorua in August. Spicebush Log: October 2014
http://spicebush.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Monday, October 20, 2014. I raked lots of oak leaves (and tons of acorns) today, under a sunny, blue sky, before a stretch of rain sets in tomorrow. Kodi helped, sort of. Saturday, October 18, 2014. We planted our garlic today: 500 cloves from this year's July harvest. Every year my Dad prepares the garden for the annual planting. He discs up a new plot roughly 4 feet by 50 feet. This fall he spent extra time discing, which helped a lot. The soil was soft and easy to hoe. Thanks Dad. Hermine Hits Florida...

Spicebush Log: August 2014
http://spicebush.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Saturday, August 23, 2014. Spending a few days in the Champlain Valley with family, which always includes a hike up Mt. Philo. In Charlotte, VT. Although not quite 1000' in elevation, the mountain offers great views of Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains beyond. Although yesterday morning when we hiked it was misting and socked in. This kept our attention on small things, up close. Two favorite sightings: red efts and millipedes, both favor damp days to move about and forage. A Big Black Horse Fly.
