From Blackpool to Basel. Or from riesling to spätburgunder). Friday, 30 January 2015. Late January in Basel. Posted by Simon Jones. Thursday, 29 January 2015. Valentin Schiess first got into wine 25 years ago, working in a wine cellar in Spain. He subsequently gained winemaking experience in Australia, New Zealand and California, before studying oenology in Dijon. He now has his own winemaking cellar in Gundeldingen –. Wrote a profile on Herr Schiess. Last year. This is his white wine. Thank you Valentin...

From Blackpool to Basel: Paradiesgarten
http://fromblackpooltobasel.blogspot.com/2015/06/paradiesgarten.html
From Blackpool to Basel. Or from riesling to spätburgunder). Tuesday, 30 June 2015. Paradiesgarten is German for "Garden of Eden". It's also a lovely vineyard that overlooks the western tail-end of Deidesheim near the open-air swimming pool (I went for a refreshing dip there once, lovely place). A stone statue of a naked Eve also adorns the scenery. Weingut von Winning, Erste Lage, Deidesheimer Paradiesgarten "Selection MAX" trocken 2014, Pfalz. Posted by Simon Jones. From Blackpool to Basel: March 2014
http://fromblackpooltobasel.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
From Blackpool to Basel. Or from riesling to spätburgunder). Wednesday, 19 March 2014. Brenneisen, Grauburgunder 2012. The wines of local vintner Dirk Brenneisen have featured on this blog before. The odyssey now continues with what, for me, is the most impressive of the lot so far. Weingut Brenneisen, Grauburgunder trocken 2012, Baden, Germany. Tasting blind, I might have mistaken this for a Silvaner. The alcohol level is only 12 percent but there is an amazing density of flavour. I'm not saying...Vintn...

From Blackpool to Basel: August 2014
http://fromblackpooltobasel.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
From Blackpool to Basel. Or from riesling to spätburgunder). Sunday, 24 August 2014. This is not meant to sound condescending, but Dirk Brenneisen's wines remind me more and more of Hanspeter Ziereisen's. Like his colleague in Efringen a couple of miles down the road, Brenneisen only minimally filters his wines if at all, he chooses not to deal with piddling issues such as whether his wines are "typical" enough to earn the Qualitätswein. Label (he bottles everything as Landwein. Of which only a third wer...

http://fromblackpooltobasel.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
From Blackpool to Basel. Or from riesling to spätburgunder). Sunday, 29 June 2014. I must say, I'm liking Rheinhessen's dry Rieslings more and more. Again, this one is from the Hundertgulden vineyard. Weingut Knewitz, Appenheimer Hundertgulden Riesling trocken 2012, Rheinhessen, Germany. Not straw-yellow, but "on the yellow side of straw" –. According to my initial scribbled note. There is also a slight honey/reddish tinge. Posted by Simon Jones. Wednesday, 4 June 2014. Given by Dr Ashcroft –. Mostly con...

From Blackpool to Basel: October 2014
http://fromblackpooltobasel.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
From Blackpool to Basel. Or from riesling to spätburgunder). Thursday, 30 October 2014. Weingut Vollenweider, Wolfer Goldgrube Riesling Kabinett 2012, Mosel. Or, as my wife said in her understated way: "Yummy.". Posted by Simon Jones. Thursday, 23 October 2014. From my point of view, dry Mosel Rieslings used to have a bit of "fear factor". Although climate change has helped further the trend towards Mosel trockens. Purchased for a mere 10 Swiss francs (! As a bin-end, bargain-basement deal here in Basel?

From Blackpool to Basel. Or from riesling to spätburgunder). Wednesday, 26 November 2014. The Swiss lady from the local wine shop. Schlossgut Schmitt, Guntersblumer Kreuz Kapelle Würzer Kabinett feinherb 2011, Rheinhessen. Posted by Simon Jones. Saturday, 15 November 2014. Breumel in den Mauern. Two bottles of the following wine found their way into my possession –. Riesling lovers outside Germany still go crazy for Müller-Catoir. However, since Hans-Günther Schwarz retired in the early 2000s –. Weingut ...

From Blackpool to Basel: Farmer Giles
http://fromblackpooltobasel.blogspot.com/2015/04/farmer-giles.html
From Blackpool to Basel. Or from riesling to spätburgunder). Saturday, 25 April 2015. That's the nickname my wife and I gave Hanspeter Ziereisen after tasting his wines back in early 2010. Most who grew up in the UK would understand what we mean. For all others, it's simply our affectionate way of referring to one of Baden's most brilliant wine- growers. I would imagine the original " Farmer Giles. It was a while since I last tried this. One bottle still to go after this one. Posted by Simon Jones. Legal...
