West Hill Views: Reaching Out
http://westhillviews.blogspot.com/2011/03/reaching-out.html
Observations from West Hill Center . Ideas, Business, Arts, Events, Area Changes, Visioning. Monday, March 7, 2011. One of our tenants at West Hill Center is going to Oman on Thursday to install software for monitoring oil wells. Although, there is growth in this area West Hill is still 'out in the country" overlooking a 1700 acre ranch with goats and horses. I love having a company who does business internationally here. I find it remarkable and exciting that we are all more connected.
WITSML and the Web: February 2006
http://witsml.blogspot.com/2006_02_01_archive.html
WITSML and the Web. Thursday, February 09, 2006. Using SOAP as the packaging for WITSML messages adds nothing and gives up a lot, compared to using HTTP/REST. A customer integration revealed a concrete issue. Our client wants to collaborate with a partner on the rig. Our client maintains. In that particular case, no problem. The partner calls WITSML UpdateInStore on an element that our client never modifies. Say more than one partner on the rig needs to modify the shared element. In practice we'll have w...

WITSML and the Web: November 2006
http://witsml.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_archive.html
WITSML and the Web. Friday, November 10, 2006. I hope some people from the WITSML/PRODML community sit in on. In the end analysis, success for architecture is measured by its ability to assimilate changes in mission, implementation, interconnection, and scope without the need for incompatible changes. Put succinctly, 20 years into an architecture, success is measured by the ability of systems implemented on Day One to interoperate unchanged with systems implemented on Day 20369. WITSML and the Web: Woefully Underspecified
http://witsml.blogspot.com/2006/03/woefully-underspecified.html
WITSML and the Web. Saturday, March 11, 2006. Gary Masters of POSC circulated an email. Today, beginning "I was trying to create an update template and I realized that the behavior is woefully underspecified.". The first problem is the WITSML group has attempted to create a query and update language, but has done that in an ad hoc, unrigorous manner. Not all this complex query and update behavior crudding up WITSML. Download it with GET, modify it, and replace the whole darn thing with PUT. But to build ...
Messages not Models: Exploring the Bakken using WebGL
http://hughw.blogspot.com/2012/02/exploring-bakken-using-webgl.html
Hugh Winkler holding forth on computing and the Web. Sunday, February 12, 2012. Exploring the Bakken using WebGL. In the spirit of Done is Better than Perfect. We recently unleashed Subsurfr, a 3-D subsurface visualization web app for oil and gas. We primed it using 17,000 wells from North Dakota. Since the Bakken shale is a very active play, some geologists and engineers are going to be very happy to have this new arrow in their quiver. Here's a fun look at the very busy Bakken. From a well planner's pov.

Hugh Winkler holding forth on computing and the Web. Friday, February 24, 2012. MVC Frameworks. Keep 'em. I said it here in 2006. MVC on the server is a poor fit for web apps. Here's a more up-to-date critique. Which I introduced here a few days ago. Links to this post. Monday, February 13, 2012. Jakob Nielsen: Web will beat mobile apps. The excellent FT iPad web app suggests that native app UX only surpasses web app UX because typical web apps don't put in the effort. There's very little I find in nativ...
