The Old Orphanage - Winwick (Northants)

Winwick Orphanage was opened in the late 1870s by the new schoolmaster, Henry Stafford, though it was more of a boarding school for young adults than an actual orphanage. In 1913 he bought the Winwick Manor Estate with the idea of becoming a Country Gentlemen but with the outbreak of the First World War, he rejoined his old regiment and was killed in action at Givenchy in France on December 22nd, 1914. One of the earliest references to Winwick can been found in the Domesday Book of 1086 which mentions that the Monks of Coventry hold about 30 acres of land in the village, which is valued at 50/-. The 1950s - The Beginning of the End. Impington Hall, which shamelessly was allowed fall into disrepair and eventually after having been converted into other uses pulled down, was the home of the Pepys for over two hundred years. It was located opposite Impington Church and today part of the parkland has Impington Village College built on it. It was here that Samuel Pepys came to visit his great uncle, Talbot, for advice and as a result Impington is often refered to in the diaries of Samuel Pepys.
