Discovering stories about Hamilton - its people, places, past and present. Friday, 30 August 2013. Hamilton Chinese - the Mook Family. I could wrap you up in newspaper and there wouldn’t be a gap anywhere! This somewhat startling skill comes from working in Mook’s Fruit Shop after school in 1960s Hamilton. Along with wielding an alarming knife to slice up the tough Queensland Blue pumpkins, it is one of the many skills of Teresa Purnell. We are the Hamilton Chinese', is the rapid reply. This iconic build...

THE MARK OF GAUL. A Literature and Ideas Blog. The Slap (2008) Christos Tsiolkas. October 14, 2014. The boy’s face had gone dark with fury. He raised his foot and kicked wildly into Harry’s shin. The speed was coursing through Hector’s blood, the hairs on his neck were upright. He saw his cousin’s raised arm, it spliced the air, and then he saw the open palm descend and strike the boy. The slap seemed to echo. It cracked the twilight’. This finally, was love. This was its shape and essence, once the ...

Big Hearted. Senstive. Letter to my (slightly) younger self. September 17, 2014. I know you are approaching 40 with a dread you normally reserve for medical procedures. And you’re in a bad spot- you’ve lost confidence, doubt yourself and can’t see any light ahead. Thank goodness you’ve always known that one. Oh, and don’t panic but you’re going to give up sugar. Try not to talk about that too much. Peachy Keen Mumma (Jess). September 25, 2014 at 6:54 am. A barber shop here in Newcastle? How cool is that!
