West Quoddy Head Light is the only candy-striped lighthouse in the U.S.A. It is located in beautiful Quoddy Head State Park and overlooks Sail Rock, which is the easternmost point of land in the continental United States. The first tower, wooden, was built in 1808, by order of President Thomas Jefferson. The tower standing and operating today was built in 1857 and became operational in 1858. The Visitor Center Museum is located inside the 1858 Light Keepers' house adjacent to the lighthouse. Five years in the making and first opened to visitors in 2002, the Center is staffed by local volunteers who are eager to share their knowledge of the Lighthouse, its history, and a myriad of local stories of times gone by, and of today.
