What Rachel's Reading

Habibi, by Criag Thompson. Thursday, January 19, 2012. Here's a review of a graphic novel to kick things off. And let me just say- Whoa. I've read Craig Thompson's critically-praised earlier works, and if I were to use one word to describe Goodbye, Chunky Rice. It would be "bittersweet". Blankets. Would be "loss." If I were to use one word to describe Habibi. It would be "epic.". Actually, I might throw "tragedy" in there, too. Art on every page. The author must have learned Arabic to write this, and...

What Rachel's Reading: June 2009

http://whatrachelsreading.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Thursday, June 18, 2009. I had no desire to read this book originally. It seemed to be romanticizing a crazy dog with irresponsible owners, and I had a strong hunch that the dog died in the end. I hate. It when dogs die. Why would I want to read about that? Plus, this book was an easy reading top-seller, and I enjoy being contrary and ignoring popular trends. That's just me. Monday, June 15, 2009. Has anyone else read A Prayer for Owen Meany. If so, has anyone else found it fantastically boring? I won't ...

Thursday, January 12, 2012. I just knew I'd forget one. When I wrote Christmas Roundup: Children's books. I had a feeling I was forgetting one. And I was. It was an impulse purchase at a local shop, and it was so beautiful I bought it right away. At full price! 5 One Starry Night. Image and blogged here. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Sunday, October 3, 2010. It's a good story, but none of the characters are very exemplary and as such, Hollywood is releasing the movie next summer. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). What Rachel's Reading: August 2011

http://whatrachelsreading.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Thursday, August 11, 2011. I never stopped reading, but I did stop blogging. For almost ten months. I miss it, but I also miss having extra physical and mental energy, so there you have it. I'd like to return to blogging consistently but I don't know if that's possible, but in the meantime here's some miscellaneous reading goodness for you. A new Credenda/Agenda Magazine is out! And general mocking of various follies. Welcome back, Credenda. You've been missed. Have you signed up for Goodreads. Justin Ta...

Chart of Shared Data. The future culture of work. His is a very long presentation about work policies at Netflix but you can skim through it pretty fast. I’d love it if I could get my company to adopt some of the freedoms seen here. 80% of my job is done on the computer (reports, CAD, reports, planning tests) and I can work on it anywhere. Marianne Krauss's Blog. Life As We See It…. May 5, 2010. I was so excited to successfully make Pad Thai for dinner last night! Here is the recipe. I made a few substitutions and we had peanut sauce on the side. I used two eggs, soy sauce instead of fish sauce, white vinegar instead of tamarind, whole package of rice noodles, left out the dried chili powder (for Kaits sake), banana flower, peanuts and preserved turnip (eww). I found the recipe here. Ground dried chili pepper. Tofu – extra firm. Address ne...

I took her pants off, changed her diaper and we became the white trash row on the airplane as I hung her pants on the tray table and she sat in her diaper. Thankfully there was an elevator but as the doors at our level opened three things happened. 2) Kaitlyn darted out without me. The people around me probably thought I was crazy as I was mumbli...

Food and Food Allergies. The good life is inspired by love and guided by knowledge. Bertrand Russell. Someone once told me that children are put on this planet to heal us. Whether that is through their love and joy, or what they teach us, they are here to heal us. I never quite understood this until I had my son, and months after his birth, I realized that he was here to save my life, and I in turn, am saving his. Here is our story. What Rachel Eats

Wednesday, April 13, 2011. One of the biggest things I miss about home is Cafe Rio. They have the best salad dressing ever. I have tried so. Many recipes and I haven't found anything that has the right consistency or flavor. One of my former co-workers sent me an amazing recipe for tomatillo ranch dressing which I modified a bit. I think it tastes pretty close to cafe rio. I really like that it isn't runny like a lot of recipes I've tried. 1 regular ranch dressing packet. 1 tomatillo, peeled. Tonight I w...
