Thursday, May 14, 2009. Is also known as the School Accountability Bill. This bill will be cutting out the Fine Arts requirement. The option for Fine Arts will still exist, but for how long? If Fine Arts are not required will students still take these classes? Is an example of a non-profit working to bring the arts to the underprivileged as a alternative to more destructive behavior. "When in [Texas]": Push for Recycling

http://www.whenintexas.blogspot.com/2009/04/push-for-recycling.html

Tuesday, April 14, 2009. There is a lot of talk about getting Austin to go greener, discussions of making biking more accessable for commuters, and tax breaks for those utilizing solar power, but what about recyling? Reisidential complexes (apartments and multi-family homes) that house 100 or more people, business with 100 workers onsite at the same time and office buildings with 100 or more employees onsite at the same time - within the city limits of Austin - are required to provide recycling. Over all...

"When in [Texas]": February 2009

http://www.whenintexas.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html

Friday, February 20, 2009. It was second grade, and I wrote with my left hand. I wrote with my left hand, and smiled as the teachers told me I was "different," told me I was "special.". I smiled, "I write with my left hand! She smiled at me, "Why, yes - it looks like you do.". It wasn't until the second grade when my father noticed, "What do you think you're doing? His voice was loud and commanding. Innocently, I replied "I'm doing my homework; we're starting cursive in school.". I just smile. How fu...

"When in [Texas]": Gimme Gimme Gimme - Some More Bike Lanes Please!!!

http://www.whenintexas.blogspot.com/2009/05/gimme-gimme-gimme-some-more-bike-lanes.html

Tuesday, May 5, 2009. Gimme Gimme Gimme - Some More Bike Lanes Please! Austin was named a Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Community in May 2007 by the League of American Bicyclists. Are they doing this as a means of enforcing policies to keep people safe, or are they doing it as a bike lash to Critical Mass and biking in the city of Austin in general? Both sides have points, but if we really want more saftey in Austin for cyclists can we put in some much needed bike lanes instead of just ticketing folks?

"When in [Texas]": March 2009

http://www.whenintexas.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html

Tuesday, March 24, 2009. No Money for Crack Heads. In the March 20th article, " Point Austin: Removing the Mask. This sort of argument for turning down a gift horse in hard times is roughly akin to a child refusing to accept his allowance because it will eventually have to be replenished, perhaps even by his own efforts. Maybe that's how they do things back in Perry's hometown of Paint Creek – but in most parts of Texas, it's called cutting off your nose to spite the feds.". Friday, March 6, 2009. Austi...

Texas: People and Powers: Lauren's blog

http://springgov3.blogspot.com/2009/04/laurens-blog.html

Texas: People and Powers. Saturday, April 25, 2009. Lauren comments on the proposed bill that would allow handguns on college campuses. Her position is not firmly stated but she does lean for the passing of the bill. Her tone is not aggressive which suggests that she is analyzing and providing information but is not 100% all for it. I believe Lauren’s audience is general because she does explain and give information about the issue in a very clear diction. I like the way Lauren explained both the negativ...

Texas: People and Powers: Border Drug War Demands More Attention.

http://springgov3.blogspot.com/2009/04/border-drug-war-demands-more-attention.html

Texas: People and Powers. Friday, April 3, 2009. Border Drug War Demands More Attention. In the Austin American Statesman. Commentary section Tom Teepen argues that "We" need to do more about the drug war problem in the U.S-Mexican border. His main claim is that the current policies in place are not enough to reduce the drug traffic and weapon trade and that the government needs to make some changes to the strategies that have been used up until now. I also think the use of the first person point of view...

Texas: People and Powers. Thursday, May 14, 2009. Comments on Dinora's Blog. This is in response to Dinora’s “Teen Mothers Need Help Blog.” The bill that is being considered 592 will provide contraceptives to teenage mothers in order to prevent unwanted pregnancies. I totally agree with this measure. I know that ideally we would want our teenagers to practice abstinence but this is not how it usually occurs so why not make contraceptives available? When In Sweden

Experiences and stories from an American girl living in Sweden. Wednesday, May 7, 2014. Sweden's Got Some Really Old Stuff. Like, seriously old stuff. As an American, I think any building or landmark, or really, even person, that dates to the early 1900s is ancient (or in the case of a person, let's say 'full of wisdom! Which is a totally valid reason to uproot your life, leave your loved ones, and move to a country where you don't know a single person and don't speak the language.). This weekend, I took...
