Where going havo?

Exploring (not just) bilingualism and its role in our life. Wednesday, October 1, 2014. Today marks one month into the new school year. We had some changes this year, because M is going to preschool half-days (has to learn Czech somewhere) and K finished preschool/kindergarten and started homeschooling first grade. With all of that, it's actually kind of surprising we have done any school at all! We're busy with math, spelling and handwriting (English print and Czech cursive) and spent quite a bit of tim...

Exploring (not just) bilingualism and its role in our life. Thursday, November 29, 2012. Having Babies and Making Glossaries. I have spent my blogging time yesterday and today writing up information and a Czech-English L&D glossary for a friend who is about to have a baby here in the Czech Republic. I am thinking I should expand (or condense? I tend to be very thorough) it and publish it here as "The English Speaker's Guide to Giving Birth in the Czech Republic". Labels: neither here nor there. The Slova...

Exploring (not just) bilingualism and its role in our life. Wednesday, December 19, 2012. This Monday was the preschool Christmas event, with carol singing and a Christmas play. K rocked it as Maruška in the fairy tale "O dvanácti měsíčkách". When she told us last month that she would be playing Maruška, we didn't know what the play would be but we figured that a named character was probably relatively important. Turns out Maruška is the main character. We were highly curious to see how it all turned out.

Exploring (not just) bilingualism and its role in our life. Tuesday, May 7, 2013. Fitting It All In: Reading and Time Management. Evenings are hectic around here, as I imagine they are in most homes. We usually have only 1-2 hours, sometimes less, between the Slovak getting home from work and bedtime, and in that time we have to cook dinner, eat dinner, read a chapter book, do a reading lesson, and do the bedtime routine (story and songs). If we had continued doing a lesson every single night without fai...

Share this post: Tweet. Follow me: Follow @JenCawe. Sunday, 12 June 2011. As I thought about what I wrote in Why I'm smug about language mixing. What struck me as I wrote the "smug" post is that in our case we are not practicing multilingualism for its own sake, or for some cognitive benefits discussed by academics and eager parents, but to achieve some communicative goals. Specific to our situation. Exposure, especially if they never develop the active mastery of the language. If you stop, it will g...

Of little Fren...

Where Goes the River

Where Goes the River. Friday, December 30, 2011. One of the most common topics in current affairs discussions is economic inequality, the assertion that “over recent decades, the government has consistently favored the rich,” and that this inequality “pervades every corner of the United States and saps the strength of its democracy,” as described in a recent Foreign Affairs article by George Packer.
