Wide Blue World: Finds

Thursday, August 13, 2015. As I've unpacked my boxes from storage, some of which I've been apart from for over a year, I've found some wonderful things: a pretty shoulder bag I've never used, my favorite winter scarves, reliable kitchen tools. I bought my sprouting jar a hundred years ago (ok, maybe fifteen), that summer I worked at Bryce Canyon. I don't guess I've ever used it as much since. I remember going hiking and taking sandwiches dressed with sprouts: egg salad, hummus, cheese. This is a story of...

Wide Blue World: Finds: Guest Lecturer

http://www.wideblueworld-finds.blogspot.com/2015/06/guest-lecturer.html

Tuesday, June 16, 2015. Please welcome today's guest lecturer at the TransPecos Landscape Immersion Program. Fortunately s/he was on the outside of my tent. And the only species of scorpion in the United States that is dangerously venomous lives only in Arizona. These guys can give a very painful sting, but not serious damage to a human. Wide Blue World: Finds: July 2015

http://www.wideblueworld-finds.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html

Thursday, July 23, 2015. With the recent rains and a misguided notion that mornings might be cooler this week, I've now spent two of those mornings out on Mimm's Ranch at the edge of town walking the dirt road all the way out to the small seating area on a hill. My efforts have paid off in a pair of burrowing owls (! Tuesday, July 7, 2015. Saturday, July 4, 2015. We are blessed in Marfa to have a weekly farmers' market. It is small as these things go. But rich in goodies. Today a man was sell...

Wide Blue World: Finds: Hiding in Plain Sight

http://www.wideblueworld-finds.blogspot.com/2015/06/hiding-in-plain-sight.html

Monday, June 22, 2015. Hiding in Plain Sight. Traveling around the back streets of Marfa today I came across this stunning sight: a fully loaded apricot tree and two of its friends. I won't disclose the location; you may know it. And I won't disclose the exact number of fruit I may or may not have inhaled. I fought the insects for them fair and square. Wide Blue World: Dispatches: The Road to Podcasting

http://wideblueworld-dispatches.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-road-to-podcasting.html

Wednesday, July 15, 2015. The Road to Podcasting. I’m in the midst of preparing this week’s podcast, #7 already. It requires a road trip which is a pretty wonderful thing. And it’s a short road trip which is equally wonderful because I have little motivation to venture too far from my. The godfather of modern radio storytelling) giving some hints. I’ve read a lot of advice on this, but his seems the most relevant and timely for me and my goals. Ira Glass’s Rules for Podcasting. Keep going even when you m...

http://wideblueworld-daily.blogspot.com/2015/08/august-14-2015.html

August 14, 2015. Normally I come home from my long Mimm's Ranch walk and make my lunch and spend my afternoon working on novel or podcast or cleaning my bathroom (favorite avoidance technique) etc. I just now got home and looked at what I have on my task list for this afternoon: lunch out and a haircut. Wide Blue World: Dispatches: Smelling the Earth

http://wideblueworld-dispatches.blogspot.com/2015/05/smelling-earth.html

Monday, May 11, 2015. Two of my goals for the Marfa weekend were 1. sitting on the hard seats of the Crowley Theater. And partaking of the CineMarfa film festival, and 2. getting outside and enjoying the record spring bloom. Don't worry- it should go without saying I ate some good food too. A highlight of the festival was a series of four short experimental films by a local artist. My goal of getting outside was fulfilled on Saturday when I took my favorite local walk on Mimm's Ranch. Wide Blue World: Dispatches: Minimalism is not Perfection

http://wideblueworld-dispatches.blogspot.com/2015/08/minimalism-is-not-perfection.html

Tuesday, August 4, 2015. Minimalism is not Perfection. I finally got around to visiting some of the small galleries in my neighborhood this past Saturday. It was fun. I saw some art and commerce and had nice interaction, especially a surprise conversation about Eastern Europe with the insightful Latvian-American who turns out to be my neighbor. She proceeded to explain to me that minimalism was just reducing something until it could be reduced no farther, a stripping bare. 8217;s definition of perfection:.
