A blog about wildlife, agriculture, and everything in between. Guest Post by Efraín Delgado. What really was the moon? How do huge planes get off the floor? As time passed I found the answers to these questions but more and more came to take their place. I soon found out that the reason humans are able to understand these things is because of science. I was amazed at the thought of it. Now, fast forward a little and I find myself going out doing actual science. Constructing transects, taking samples,...

A blog about wildlife, agriculture, and everything in between. We've seen a lot of savannah sparrows foraging in the alfalfa fields. The last six weeks have been a blur. My dreams have been taken over by PVC pipe and stalks of alfalfa. My experiment has started! So, for better or worse, I've been out in the field just about every day since mid-February. For you loyal blog readers (of which I doubt there are many), I'm sorry about the radio silence for so long. What have I been up to all this time? I've b...

http://sarakross.weebly.com/avoiding-jargon.html

Sara M. Kross. Workshop: The Science Pitch. Working with your Press Officer. Identifying (and avoiding) Jargon. Jargon is one of the most important things to learn how to identify and avoid when it comes to science communication. Jargon are words or expressions that are only used by a small subset of people. Planning to talk to people about running your PCRs or an assemblage of species? Unless they’re your colleagues at a conference, you'll probably be met with blank stares. Which is what inspired the up...

Key Elements - Sara M. Kross

http://sarakross.weebly.com/key-elements.html

Sara M. Kross. Workshop: The Science Pitch. Working with your Press Officer. Great stories need to connect with people. They need to make people envision and appreciate what's going on. We covered 3 potential components that you should think about incorporating into your science story pitch: Anecdotes, Analogies, and Imagery. A short story related to the topic that is amusing and/or interesting. Did you find yourself in a cave surrounded by angry bats? Comparing blue whales to common objects (tanks, plan...

Sara M. Kross. Workshop: The Science Pitch. Working with your Press Officer. If there’s one thing that scientists could do to improve releases, I would suggest that they first try to summarize their take-home message to an educated, non-scientist friend or relative before writing up the sales pitch. Use that discussion to ask: what makes the biggest impression on the listener? Is a metaphor or example needed early on to help get the point across? Journalists Comment on Science Press Releases. Wild Farm Maple Syrup

Wild Farm Maple Syrup. SINCE 1972, we have taken pride in producing the best, purest maple syrup that money can buy. In early spring, as daytime temperatures rise above freezing, we tap several hundred trees and hang buckets. Family and friends gather the sap daily when the weather is favorable and boil it in our traditional wood-fired evaporator, often late into the night. We make less than 100 gallons of syrup per year so we can take pride in producing the best maple syrup money can buy.
