A wildlife photographer's case book. Successful photography of Sand Martins requires commitment over several weeks. These members of the Swallow family are only present for the summer months, and are very restricted as to where they nest. Holes in river banks are a traditional site, if you can find them, but sand or clay quarries are a more 'modern' nesting site. It was fascinating watching the birds before the eggs were laid. They would disappear for about half an hour to feed, then would come wheel...

A wildlife photographer's case book. Badgers are a hot topic in the South West due to the high incidences of TB in cattle and the proposed cull. Hopefully the science, that a cull will not work, will take precedence over political issues. Recent trials on badger vaccination have shown great promise, so let us hope that common sense will prevail, and not emotional, unscientific rhetoric. Setts usually have multiple entrances and setts that have been around for some years can extend a long way under a wood.

The problem with infrared is that, in general, the light source is not very bright and does not extend very far. This is clearly shown in the video below. If the subject moves out of the light beam, very little can be seen. Careful positioning of the camera is essential. And hope for a great improvement. I have read many reports to the effect that animals ignore floodlights, and will report here on the effect. My aim is to use a DSLR and take the images myself, rather than using a trail camera.

After experimenting with various lighting methods, I finally decided to have wiring laid up to the hide. Initially I thought of larger battery LED lights, but they cost hundreds, making fixed wiring competitive. The great day arrived - yesterday. A small but powerful digger to dig a 90 metre long trench to the hide plus an electrician. As our site used to be a nursery, there were water pipes and cables everywhere, but we were confident as we had a map from the previous owners. Now I had to choose lights.

Στην πρώτη θέση ισοβάθμησαν 2 φωτογραφίες, αλλά με ένα πεντάρι παραπάνω (16) ήρθε τελικά πρώτη η υπέροχη συνθεση Ροδοπελεκάνων του Χρήστου. Δεύτερη με 1 πεντάρι λιγότερο (15) είναι η φωτογραφία του Μιχάλη Κωτσάκη με ένα Ψαραετό με λεία. Τρίτη είναι άλλη μια φωτογραφία του Χρήστου Βλάχου, ένας Μαυροπελαργός που "σχεδιάζει" με το νερό. Πρώτη ήρθε η φωτογραφία της ανάδυσης ενός Αλπικού Τρίτωνα του Πέτρου Πέτρου.
