Mammal surveys | Wild New Forest

http://www.wildnewforest.co.uk/mammal-surveys

Skip to Main Content. Several of the more common New Forest mammal species, such as Fallow Deer, Fox, Grey Squirrel and Badger, are encountered during routine surveys between dawn and dusk. However, a number of scarce and largely nocturnal species such as Muntjac Deer, Otter, Polecat and even Pine Marten are much harder to see, and relatively little is known of their distribution and populations. A rare view of a Muntjac Deer, photographed on a cold day at Rhinefield in 24 Dec 2010. Follow us on Facebook.

Skip to Main Content. Pine Martens in the New Forest: autumn 2016 update. By Russell Wynn, 06 November 2016. Http:/ www.newforestnpa.gov.uk/news/article/801/extinct pine martens discovered in the new forest. The Pine Marten recorded on our camera traps featured on ITV News on 28 March 2016. The sighting raised a number of questions: How many animals are at large in the New Forest? How did they get here? And are they breeding? Pine Marten road-kill from 27 Apr 2016 (photo by Ian Barker). Mammal camera trapping in the New Forest: 2016 review | Wild New Forest

Skip to Main Content. Mammal camera trapping in the New Forest: 2016 review. By Russell Wynn, 09 January 2017. In 2016, WNF operated two camera traps in the New Forest under Forestry Commission licence. The aim was to collect information on the distribution of some of the scarcer mammal species in the national park, such as Muntjac Deer and possibly Polecat, Otter and Pine Marten. An introduction to the project was provided in an earlier blog:. Finally, one of the cameras was deployed at a Badger sett in...

Hawfinch survey update: Mar-May 2016 | Wild New Forest

http://www.wildnewforest.co.uk/hawfinch-survey-update-mar-may-2016

Skip to Main Content. Hawfinch survey update: Mar-May 2016. By Marcus Ward, 13 August 2016. Immature Hawfinch at Bolderwood photographed by Marcus; young birds readily give themselves away with their incessant high-pitched begging call. They can be picked out from flocks leaving the roost on call, a good way of qualitatively determining how successful the season has been. Adult female Hawfinch sat on the nest, taken by Marcus in 2013. Click here https:/ youtu.be/9LvUG3LsLU0. Follow us on Facebook.

Russ's Blog: Silly me - left too early.

http://russbirdsetc.blogspot.com/2016/12/silly-me-left-too-early.html

Some periodic ramblings about bird, butterflies, moths, dragonflies, hovers and anything else that pops into my head. Sunday, 4 December 2016. Silly me - left too early. The gull roost was well lit and contained 100 Commons and a Med Gull. Frankly, I was too cold and sore to sit there any longer and drove home; both Ring-billed Gulls were on GoingBirding as soon as I got in so presumably came in to roost as I was driving away! Saturday, 18 April 2015. Had a wander through one the high heaths of the forest today and despite the chilling north east wind it was pretty warm in the sheltered spots. Dartford Warblers were pretty abundant today with birds almost appearing to sing from every gorse bush. Other bits seen today:. Redstart - several cracking males. Covered a lot of sites and ground today and thoroughly enjoyed the surroundings, the sun and fresh air. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). WASH WADER RINGING GROUP. Waderworld...

Some periodic ramblings about bird, butterflies, moths, dragonflies, hovers and anything else that pops into my head. Tuesday, 31 May 2016. Burton Mill Pond (SWT). A few Speckled Yellows were buzzing around and a pair of Hairy Shieldbugs were joined end on end. A Garden Warbler sang away nearby and within a few yards of a Blackcap doing likewise, for a nice comparison. The roadside vegetation held the usual damsels but no dragons. Two nice tachinid flies namely Tachina fera. Dummy text with HOS Link.

A couple of hours with precious little on either scrape, other than Teal and four Snipe. Just a single Buzzard. On the sea 25 each (approximately) of Eider, mostly males and Common Scoter (females). On the beach the Snow Bunting was down to six feet. Friday, 9 December 2016. No Cettis today, just Goldcrest.
