Adventures of a Marine Biologist: April 2013

http://wildoceanphotography.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html

Humans and the Sea. Rest of the World. How to: Take Better Photographs. Saturday, 27 April 2013. Work, work, work (and sea monsters). It's been a hectic two weeks. After the weather finally decided to stop chasing us around, we got ourselves over to our study site at the Porcupine Abyssal Plain to start what has probably been the most diverse range of deep-sea work I've encountered on a cruise! Trawling in the Abyss. The benthic fishes include the grenadiers (top four images) and eels (bottom image).

Adventures of a Marine Biologist: Gone fishing...

http://wildoceanphotography.blogspot.com/2015/07/gone-fishing.html

Humans and the Sea. Rest of the World. How to: Take Better Photographs. Tuesday, 7 July 2015. That you aren't currently following the official Porcupine Abyssal Plain (PAP) Observatory blog, I thought I'd leave you a wee link to the post I wrote for them at the weekend about our trawling work. Enjoy! Https:/ papobservatory.wordpress.com/2015/07/06/gone-fishing/. Bringing the nets on board. The armoured grenadier, Coryphaenoides armatus,. Caught from 4850 m down! Posted by Zan Milligan. Adventures of a Marine Biologist: To the Abyss (again!)

http://wildoceanphotography.blogspot.com/2015/06/to-abyss-again.html

Humans and the Sea. Rest of the World. How to: Take Better Photographs. Tuesday, 23 June 2015. To the Abyss (again! It's nice to be back at sea! Last Friday, I left Glasgow with one of my fish-ecologist colleagues to join the RRS Discovery. For another cruise to the Porcupine Abyssal Plain (PAP) long-term survey site. This is my fourth trip out to the PAP in as many years now, and I must admit it's really nice to be back on a ship! Me and Jo, ready to sail! Leaving a wet and rainy Liverpool. The megacore...

Adventures of a Marine Biologist: June 2013

http://wildoceanphotography.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html

Humans and the Sea. Rest of the World. How to: Take Better Photographs. Sunday, 23 June 2013. Science, Photography and Freebies! To say that the last few weeks have been busy is probably the most ridiculous understatement. The PhD has hit crunch time and I'm working more or less flat-out to have 3(! Presentations prepared for the Deep-Sea Fish Symposium being held at Glasgow University in 2 weeks time all of which are on data which is still being processed. As a thank-you, I promised to make the four ima...

Adventures of a Marine Biologist: A Review of Recent Happenings

http://wildoceanphotography.blogspot.com/2015/07/a-review-of-recent-happenings.html

Humans and the Sea. Rest of the World. How to: Take Better Photographs. Wednesday, 22 July 2015. A Review of Recent Happenings. If you're a fan of my Facebook page. And if you're not, you REALLY should be! You've probably noticed that I have been keeping fairly busy this summer with the photography and I wanted to give you a quick update on how things are going. So far this year, I've tried out a few new places on the east coast of Scotland, and have visited coastal reserves around Tayport. This year, wh...

An Ocean Lover in Maine: April 2015

http://maineoceanlover.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

An Ocean Lover in Maine. Exploring Maine one beach, cove, trail, boat, bird, whale, tidepool, lobster roll at at time. Tuesday, April 28, 2015. Geeking out at Owls Head. Getting into it with Kerry and Sarah! It was a rumor that had to be investigated. Somewhere, sometime, I had heard that there were tidepools at the Owls Head Light. Good tidepools. Tidepools worth tromping through. I might have read it in Shumway. I tried to get there just a couple of weeks ago. This is what it looked like in town:.

An Ocean Lover in Maine: Being and Doing, rather than Having

http://maineoceanlover.blogspot.com/2015/07/being-and-doing-rather-than-having.html

An Ocean Lover in Maine. Exploring Maine one beach, cove, trail, boat, bird, whale, tidepool, lobster roll at at time. Wednesday, July 15, 2015. Being and Doing, rather than Having. It was a nice house, wasn't it? No, it was an estate sale and the family just needed to get rid of the boat. Was he available to show it this weekend? Sure, Sunday would be great. In the afternoon. Right after I ran 26.2 miles. I crossed the finish line at around noon; tired and cramped after a particularly difficult morning ...

An Ocean Lover in Maine. Exploring Maine one beach, cove, trail, boat, bird, whale, tidepool, lobster roll at at time. Thursday, May 28, 2015. Pond Cove, some big things, and a blogging hiatus. Headed to Kent Island on our caretaker's boat, Island Bound. So I've been a little busy lately. And it shows in the number of blog posts I've been making. But as can happen, life has gotten a little crazy. That hasn't stopped me from getting out and exploring, but has dug into my writing time by quite a lot. S...

An Ocean Lover in Maine. Exploring Maine one beach, cove, trail, boat, bird, whale, tidepool, lobster roll at at time. Thursday, December 18, 2014. A nice little gift for an ocean lover. I've been reading the Palumbi's book and really digging it. If you're looking for a good present for a budding marine biologist, this might be it. Merry Christmas! An Ocean Lover in Maine: Syzygy

http://maineoceanlover.blogspot.com/2015/07/syzygy.html

An Ocean Lover in Maine. Exploring Maine one beach, cove, trail, boat, bird, whale, tidepool, lobster roll at at time. Wednesday, July 8, 2015. At some point every summer, there is a "lowest tide". Low tides (and high tides) aren't created equal; some are lower than others. This occurs when the earth, moon, and sun are all in alignment - in syzygy. Ain't that a grand word? Three y's, no need for ordinary vowels, rhymes with "misery". I encourage it's use at your next dinner party. This species turns gree...

An Ocean Lover in Maine: Canada Day, Grand Manan, and the Greasy Pole

http://maineoceanlover.blogspot.com/2015/07/canada-day-grand-manan-and-greasy-pole.html

An Ocean Lover in Maine. Exploring Maine one beach, cove, trail, boat, bird, whale, tidepool, lobster roll at at time. Thursday, July 2, 2015. Canada Day, Grand Manan, and the Greasy Pole. Anticipation built all week here on the island, with students anxiously watching the weather and asking about departure times, schedules, and where to get the best ice cream. So it was a relief when the day finally arrived, and at the crack of dawn, our caretaker, Russ Ingalls, came to get us aboard Island Bound. Of co...

An Ocean Lover in Maine: Reasons to Love Knotted Wrack (Ascophyllum nodosum)

http://maineoceanlover.blogspot.com/2014/07/reasons-to-love-knotted-wrack.html

An Ocean Lover in Maine. Exploring Maine one beach, cove, trail, boat, bird, whale, tidepool, lobster roll at at time. Tuesday, July 29, 2014. Reasons to Love Knotted Wrack (Ascophyllum nodosum). AKA rockweed, AKA knotted wrack. It might seem like a lowly organism, merely a bit player in the drama of Maine's coast. I mean, aren't seastars and lobsters and anemones so much more glamorous? 1 Knotted wrack lives a really, really long time. The intertidal portion of the coast is a very stressful place for oc...

An Ocean Lover in Maine. Exploring Maine one beach, cove, trail, boat, bird, whale, tidepool, lobster roll at at time. Friday, December 20, 2013. Biddeford Pool, Snowy Owl, Cape Porpoise. Do I look cold? Winter can be a really interesting time on the coast of Maine. Saturday we threw on our long-johns and headed south to check out Biddeford and Kennebunkport on a frigid cold day. We figured it was awfully cold for a dog from Florida. To come along, so she wasn't invited. A poor photo of an amazing bird.

An Ocean Lover in Maine: Basking sharks, Bioacoustics, and the Bay of Fundy

An Ocean Lover in Maine. Exploring Maine one beach, cove, trail, boat, bird, whale, tidepool, lobster roll at at time. Monday, September 1, 2014. Basking sharks, Bioacoustics, and the Bay of Fundy. A basking shark - immensity and amazingness. (GMWSRS photo - I wish mine came out this good! It is glassy calm on the Bay of Fundy, and the crew of Eucheta. This is how calm it was! We are passing a herring weir on the way out to the bay, and it's hard to tell what's water and what's sky. Are my favorite, but ...
