Wild Rose Pastures

Saturday, July 25, 2015. Closet, Green Boy Quilt, and Jenga. Adjusting to the new house is going well, it's kind of nice we are close to the cattle when they are in some pastures. One morning I woke up to this outside our window; all of the calves were just hanging out in the sunrise. Obviously I took that picture through the screen on the window, sorry about that. Here's the back, pieced with scraps:. And a detail with the tag. The kids are doing well, here they are playing in the sandbox:. It was a bea...

Wild Rose Pastures: Ditch burning & new sheep

http://wildrosepastures.blogspot.com/2009/04/ditch-burning-new-sheep.html

Monday, April 20, 2009. Ditch burning and new sheep. Ditch burning actually appears to be a very common thing in South Central Iowa. So this is a more intentional burn we did in our ditch, and is more like what it is supposed to look like! It has been just astounding how much burning people do down here, there was never so much up by Ames. It seems like every ditch and pasture down here gets a fresh burn. It's nice though, because burning can be very good for the native grasses. Wild Rose Pastures Logo.

Wild Rose Pastures: Turkeys, Training pants, Another Skirt, and Bed changes

http://wildrosepastures.blogspot.com/2012/07/turkeys-training-pants-another-skirt.html

Saturday, July 28, 2012. Turkeys, Training pants, Another Skirt, and Bed changes. This is an event in itself. It has been a dry, dry year here, as you probably already know. I think previously it hadn't rained here for the last month, and we haven't seen real rain in at least two. Currently we have raised just the whites, but sometimes the bronzes are a little more tolerant of less than perfect conditions. Do we just not raise turkeys at all? I followed a tutorial from the blog "It's Our Long Story".

Wild Rose Pastures: June Exchange & Another Quilt Relish

http://wildrosepastures.blogspot.com/2011/06/june-exchange-another-quilt-relish.html

Thursday, June 23, 2011. June Exchange and Another Quilt Relish. I signed up for a June Craft gift exchange thing this year, from the Craftaholics Anonymous. Blog Not quite sure what possessed me, but I thought it would be fun. Anyway, it's in the mail now, my gifting partner was someone who likes all the owl patterns that are hot right now and is also a Scentsy. Dealer. So I made her a candle mat from an original pattern. The owls are appliqued with button eyes, the rest is all free motion quilted in.

Wild Rose Pastures: Paint and Cementboard

http://wildrosepastures.blogspot.com/2015/04/paint-and-cementboard.html

Saturday, April 18, 2015. It's been another busy couple of weeks on the farm and the house. First, we have had a couple of calves in the cow herd, which is good news. The herd has so far done well with us only visiting it every few days. On the house front, the drywall got all finished up. And then it got textured. And then we tested some paint swatches on it. And then we painted it. Living room on right, kitchen on the left:. Living/Dining room and Great Room:. No, the kids didn't help. Yes, they di...

My Life as a Beginning Iowa Farmer at Wild Rose Pastures: School's Out For Summer

http://beginningiowafarmer.blogspot.com/2015/06/schools-out-for-summer.html

Wednesday, June 3, 2015. School's Out For Summer. We are now halfway through the second week of having both kids at home. Between the kids, the farm, and the house, I am pretty darn tired. It some ways it is fun to have them both home, like when we go outside and play on the tractor. Other times it is pretty suffocating, like when Daddy is just trying to get all 100 Serviceberry. Trees planted (I am only half way there). I make it work though and the kids do spend much of their time outside being kids.

Tuesday, November 4, 2014. Busy is too simple a word to describe how we have been recently. It has been more then a month since my last post, but we have been hurtling toward some large deadlines and that has taken most of my faculties to keep on top of. I will discuss them soon in another post. Herding the Turkeys inside. A Panoramic Shot of the Turkeys inside the Lean-to. There is always a part of me that misses the turkeys. My Life as a Beginning Iowa Farmer at Wild Rose Pastures: Let There Be House

http://beginningiowafarmer.blogspot.com/2015/01/let-there-be-house.html

Saturday, January 31, 2015. Let There Be House. We had an extremely mild January. This allowed us to go from piles of lumber to an almost fully put together structure in less than two-and-a-half weeks. November's weather was so cold that we were very concerned about how any progress was going to get made on the house. But three mild weeks has made a big difference. Sheeting Going On the House. Windows and Doors Going In. Cattle Eating Hay out of Two New Hay Rings. Leaky Control Valve Block. The kids cont...

My Life as a Beginning Iowa Farmer at Wild Rose Pastures: Getting Ready for Spring

http://beginningiowafarmer.blogspot.com/2015/03/getting-ready-for-spring.html

Tuesday, March 31, 2015. Getting Ready for Spring. First Calf of 2015. The tractor has been back on the farm for some time. I burned out the auxiliary hydraulic motor in the middle of winter and had to have that replaced. I finally got around to replacing the bucket on the tractor with the bale spear. Since it was the first time making the switch and using that spear with this tractor, it took a lot finagling, but two-and-a-half hours later it was done. Bale Spear Finally on the Tractor. Stay tuned as we...

Tuesday, June 17, 2014. Summer Routine and Happenings. We have not sold the house yet. We have had several productive showings, but nobody has put in an offer yet. It is hard to plan for what this production season might look like or how long it might take before we get to work on actually moving livestock out to the new place. The uncertainty about things is really wearing on both of Janice and I. Supervising a Cattle Move. New Chicken Pen on Pasture. Excited about Baby Turkeys. Turkey Pullets at Play.

GIVEN 24 HOURS YOUR BODY WILL:. We are living in the smartest, most wonderful creation! I've been utterly frothing over these photos lately. The tab has been open on my computer for about 2 weeks - much to Matt's dismay, I refuse to close. These are all action snaps of people doing something amazing/terrifying/death defying/ how-did-you-survive-that? I'm not sure how people have the balls to do this stuff. I'm honestly flat out killing a cockroach. You can find the entire gallery here. Photo by Frank Gunn.
