GHOST OF KANO: Sometimes you're the pigeon, sometimes you're the statue.
http://ghostofkano.blogspot.com/2014/02/sometimes-youre-pigeon-sometimes-youre.html
My life with Judo. Monday, 24 February 2014. Sometimes you're the pigeon, sometimes you're the statue. South Coast Senior Kyu and Dan Split Grade Open - Worthing, UK. Yesterday I took part in my second competition. It was the same competition I took part in last year ( First Competition! But the outcome couldn't have been any different! However, the general organisation/communication on the day leaves a lot to be desired. I understand that it is impossible for the organisers to give exact times, but I'm ...

GHOST OF KANO: June 2013
http://ghostofkano.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html
My life with Judo. Wednesday, 26 June 2013. Why Judo (or any martial art) is good for children. My wife and I are expecting our first child, a boy, at the end of next month and we have had many discussions on what we wanted for our child, as most expecting couples do. I always said that if I ever had boys, I would get them into wrestling as soon as they are old enough. That was before I started Judo! I would like to share an article I read. Although it is about the differences between martial arts an...

GHOST OF KANO: January 2014
http://ghostofkano.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
My life with Judo. Monday, 27 January 2014. I mentioned quite a while ago that there would be a guest blogger who will be adding his wisdom to this blog and I am delighted to introduce Stuart Rich! It was actually from Stuart that I got the idea to keep track of my progress by writing a blog. There is a link to Stuart's blog on here, but if you can't find it, it is Judo Is Only Gentle For The Guy On Top. To start of with, Stuart thought it might be a good idea to share some things that beginners (like me!

GHOST OF KANO: Halfway there!
http://ghostofkano.blogspot.com/2014/11/halfway-there.html
My life with Judo. Tuesday, 4 November 2014. I won't say that I was disappointed though. After all, if you don't attend class you're not going to progress. Simple as that. I knew that I would have to work hard to catch up, so I just worked on my required techniques as much as possible. Whenever we did uchikomi, randori or just drilling throws, I would only do techniques I needed to perform for my grading and I felt that I was improving. But like everything else, I just kept working on it and I still do.

GHOST OF KANO: September 2013
http://ghostofkano.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
My life with Judo. Monday, 9 September 2013. Talk about a trial by fire. The last time made a post, I mentioned that my wife and I were expecting our first child. Well, since then, he has been born and it has been an experience! I'm sure that all parents who read this will agree that becoming a parent for the first time is one of the best things that can happen in your life. The moment that he was born is a feeling that I will never forget for as long as I live. The idea behind it was that when you rely ...

GHOST OF KANO: A Beginners Guide to Judo
http://ghostofkano.blogspot.com/2014/01/a-beginners-guide-to-judo.html
My life with Judo. Monday, 27 January 2014. A Beginners Guide to Judo. Sort your belt out. If you haven’t done your belt properly you look like a complete chump. No one will ever take you or your Judo seriously if you don’t tie your belt properly. Pick a suitable training partner. Try and find someone roughly your own size or better still someone a lot lighter than you. That way, even if your technique is bad you can still get them airborne. Don't pick this guy for Seio nage practise. Yes I know it’...

GHOST OF KANO: May 2013
http://ghostofkano.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html
My life with Judo. Monday, 20 May 2013. Getting back on the horse. The time of really improved things a lot. I'm still not 100%, but it is a lot better. Last week I decided that it was time to get stuck in again and Saturday was my first class back in action. I could feel that I missed a lot and I have a bit of 'ring rust', but I'm sure I'll catch up. The drill was as follows:. We stood in groups of three. Two persons on either side of the mat and one in the middle. We were allowed to have a quick water ...

GHOST OF KANO: March 2013
http://ghostofkano.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
My life with Judo. Wednesday, 13 March 2013. I did all the required throws, holds and escapes and I was awarded 5th Kyu and a brand new yellow belt. Even though I'm not really that focused on ranking anymore, it still felt nice to make another achievement and another step up the ladder. For now, I will just keep on enjoying the learning process and see where it takes me. Links to this post. Monday, 4 March 2013. I'm using this example, as I'm currently drilling it for my upcoming grading. I was havin...

GHOST OF KANO: Things are getting interesting (and tough!)
http://ghostofkano.blogspot.com/2014/06/things-are-getting-interesting-and-tough.html
My life with Judo. Friday, 20 June 2014. Things are getting interesting (and tough! Up until now, Judo has been a lot of fun and excitement. I was always able to learn techniques quickly, especially throws. I am sure the reason for that is my wrestling experience, because the main area I always have to work on is Ne-Waza. There are no submission holds in wrestling, so that was completely new to me and it is still an ongoing "achilles heel". I think the main reason for us feeling nervous about it is becau...
