Friday, December 26, 2014. Your Life in Six Words. If you had to summarize your life in six words, what would they be? Is filled with six-word memoirs by writers "famous and obscure." Here are some of the memoirs that range from funny to ironic to inspiring to heartbreaking:. One tooth, one cavity; life's cruel.". Savior complex makes for many disappointments.". Cursed with cancer. Blessed with friends." (This one was written by a nine-year-old boy with cancer). The psychic said I'd be richer.". Not a ba...

coffee with Drew: Big Brothers: Part 1

Sunday, February 8, 2015. Big Brothers: Part 1. And it never was just a job for Pete. It's who he is. Pete lives it all the time, as in the tender care he gave to Susie's parents in his own home, being a son, a nurse, and a pastor to Jeff and Maude until they passed away. I'm not sure I know anyone else who could, who would do what Pete has done for his family. God bless you, big brother. You are still a hero to me. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Monday, February 23, 2015. Cripples All of Us. Sharing a few lines from Frederick Buechner's Brendan. That touched me this morning. A good reminder. Pushing down hard with his fists on the table-top he heaved himself up to where he was standing. For the first time we saw he wanted one leg. It was gone from the knee joint down. He was hopping sideways to reach for his stick in the corner when he lost his balance. He would have fallen in a heap if Brendan hadn't leapt forward and caught him. Jerry and I us...

coffee with Drew: June 2014
http://coffeewithdrew.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Thursday, June 12, 2014. The heart of a father is the masterpiece of nature.". Father's Day, to quote Dickens, is "the best of times and the worst of times.". Don't get me wrong. You will be the dad, and you and mom will determine what's best and make the difficult decisions and even administer discipline when needed. But in a very real sense, you are no longer your own. You belong to your child and your child belongs to you. And life is never the same. 1 John 3:1 NIV). Monday, June 9, 2014. Herein lies ...

coffee with Drew: Big Brothers: Part 4
http://coffeewithdrew.blogspot.com/2015/02/big-brothers-part-4.html
Thursday, February 19, 2015. Big Brothers: Part 4. My final Big Brother reflection brings me to Jerry, the brother closest to me in age and in every other way, too. We had a few brotherly fights at our house through the years. Jim and John would mix it up from time to time, usually fighting to some kind of uneasy truce, and then working together to repair the damage, like propping up the bent bed frame with concrete blocks. Jerry and Jan are wonderful parents, and Jerry has taught me much about being a g...

Monday, February 16, 2015. Big Brothers: Part 3. It has been said by more than a few people who know our family well, even though there are three pastors among these five brothers, "John is the really nice one.". And, I guess it's true. You will never meet a kinder man, a more selfless guy, than my big brother John. I like to think the rest of us must have done a really good job on John for him to turn out so well. More than any of my brothers, John was my protector. More than once as I was growing u...

Thursday, November 20, 2014. Turkey Talk and the Ball Drops. Bad choices, dumb moves, thoughtless words. We beat ourselves up for such things and yet we are too often blind to the way our past is poisoning our present. So, our New Years can sink from optimism to pessimism faster than the ball drops, like an express elevator to the basement. Too many of us wring our hands over the days ahead, living with a low grade, ever present anxiety based on fear, not faith. As our Celtic forebearers prayed:. Mark Bi...

coffee with Drew: January 2015
http://coffeewithdrew.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Saturday, January 24, 2015. In Italy this week I had a chance to be in Florence and see Michelangelo's masterpiece, David. It is a stunning example of artistic skill and genius, David with his sling on his shoulder preparing to face Goliath. Actually, in this case, David is fifteen feet tall, so you might wonder why Goliath didn't turn and run for his life. That's the thing about geniuses - it takes one to know one. What do you make of it? Friday, January 9, 2015. How did it get so late so soon? That pat...

Monday, May 26, 2014. It's no fun being a long distance parent in such situations. Frantic phone calls, trying to get the details, poor phone service, scrambling for insurance information, "I think my wallet is still in the Escape." Thank God that Jake has lots of family nearby, Uncle Clif to the rescue with Jerry and Becca standing by. All evening I've been playing that nightmarish game called, "What if? What if he had hit someone, hurt someone, even killed someone? How would Jake live with that? In eve...

http://coffeewithdrew.blogspot.com/2015/02/big-brothers-part-2.html
Friday, February 13, 2015. Big Brothers: Part 2. It's time to move on to my second big brother, Jim, actually the fifth child in our family after Pete and my three sisters. Jim was the oldest of what Mom often referred to as "the four little boys," the tail end of the line. Some of you may recall that Jim was once a rock star, singing lead and playing guitar in a "Jesus" band in the 1970s. "Heaven Bound" then morphed into "Alpha and Omega," but they sounded pretty much the same- loud! Arlington, Virginia...
