Birth Matters: May 2008
http://yourbirthmatters.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html
Wednesday, May 28, 2008. I love positive updates. Anyway, those of you who might read my blog/thoughts will remember that I was pretty scathing in my denunciation of a certain “Mr. Smith” who seemed to discount any likelihood that ICAN could bring something of value to a meeting devoted to controversies in maternity care. An admirable trait of Mr. Smith’s is that he isn’t afraid of controversy and he isn’t afraid to open up dialog that could be heated. So thank you Mr. Smith. Links to this post. For a wh...

emblog: Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Climb: Check!
http://efdblog.blogspot.com/2009/08/cape-hatteras-lighthouse-climb-check.html
I think that God in creating Man somewhat overestimated his ability. (Oscar Wilde). Sunday, August 9, 2009. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Climb: Check! Well, I can't say I was too impressed with the Outer Banks, or "OBX", after spending this past week in mosquito-infested Nag's Head. However, at least I can say I climbed the tallest lighthouse in the United States now! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Best Friends Animal Society (Rescue and Sanctuary). Birth Matters: What do I do now?
http://yourbirthmatters.blogspot.com/2009/03/what-do-i-do-now.html
Tuesday, March 17, 2009. What do I do now? Written to a woman who transported from a homebirth and had a cesarean). Seems to be a strong theme in my life right now. Or rather, my ultimate lack of it. I may get a bit spiritual here, so reader beware. One thing that I can guarantee is that your next pregnancy and labor will be different from your last one. Every pregnancy, every baby, every labor is unique to itself. What more can they do? I don’t know. Fixthere are other reasons to have a cesarean and we ...

A Midwife in Dialogue with Medicine: On performing illness, part 1.
http://brooklynmidwife.blogspot.com/2008/08/on-performing-illness-part-1.html
A Midwife in Dialogue with Medicine. Thursday, August 28, 2008. On performing illness, part 1. It's all in how you look at it. Everyone agrees but the woman refuses to accept it. She says it is gods will that the money was taken. Upon her refusal everyone turns to us to begin the workshop. There is nothing more to be done. What is that pill? It’s for high blood pressure, the woman responds. As illness is an extremely isolating experience, it is also one that directly calls on the community to witness and...

A Midwife in Dialogue with Medicine
http://brooklynmidwife.blogspot.com/2008/07/we-have-just-returned-from-atiak.html
A Midwife in Dialogue with Medicine. Friday, July 4, 2008. We have just returned from Atiak. It is a community of IDP camps 20 miles from the Sudanese border. Literally the pathway for the rebel army and as such nearly untouched by resources. Sister Rosemary is setting up her second school in this area and so we are beginning the TBA work here. The TBAs will work hand in hand with child mothers to create a model for safe birth that is realistic for their community. February 3, 2011 at 4:45 AM.

A Midwife in Dialogue with Medicine: Personal Narrative as Medical History?
http://brooklynmidwife.blogspot.com/2008/05/personal-narrative-as-medical-history.html
A Midwife in Dialogue with Medicine. Thursday, May 8, 2008. Personal Narrative as Medical History? I am the daughter of a storyteller. Personal narrative has been alive in my cell memory since I was born. My research as of late has been on the medical history- this charting of abnormality we all fill out at the doctor, which helps them to pathologize and diagnose, yet misses most of our actual history of 'health'. About two years ago I had Cellulitus (a bacterial skin infection) on my face. In a medical ...

A Midwife in Dialogue with Medicine: great north roads
http://brooklynmidwife.blogspot.com/2008/07/great-north-roads.html
A Midwife in Dialogue with Medicine. Tuesday, July 8, 2008. It is still dark out but the alarm is blaring from Olivia's room and I can hear it through the tin walls as if it is were in the bed with me. I roll over in hopes of blocking out the noise but soon there is a knock at the door. It's 6:00. Get up. We are driving to Atiak this morning for our first workshop with the Traditional Birth Attendants who will staff the clinic. Breakfast is dry white bread with peanut butter and hot water with lemon.
