woodblock dreams

Working with moku hanga, traditional Japanese woodblock printing. The next print in my Almanack series. Begins with this carving of a man fishing. The image comes from a book by Thomas Dilworth called A New Guide to the English Tongue. I will be pairing this image with another quote from The New Book of Knowledge. The Horizon is a Circle that divideth the Part of the World seen from the Part that cannot be seen. Links to this post. From a triptych by Utagawa Kunisada. From a triptych by Utagawa Kunisada.

woodblock dreams: January 2015

http://woodblockdreams.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Studio blog of Annie Bissett. An artist working with traditional Japanese woodblock printing (moku hanga). I think of these kinds of iconic images as part of our public record, part of our visual commons. This week a well known European artist, Luc Tuymans, was convicted in Belgium of plagiarizing. Article I linked to above states that the photographer tried numerous times to contact Tuymans, and I think that it was stupid of him not to respond. Links to this post. Political Art Part 2. woodblock dreams: Lineage

http://woodblockdreams.blogspot.com/2015/08/lineage.html

Working with moku hanga, traditional Japanese woodblock printing. From a triptych by Utagawa Kunisada. While reading April Vollmer's new book. So I got to thinking about my lineage. I learned mokuhanga from Matt Brown. From a triptych by Utagawa Kunisada. Matt, too, is mostly self taught. He started making woodblock prints in the early 1990s and learned mostly through books, like Walter Phillips' Technique of the Color Woodcut. As people from whom he learned a great deal. Of Paden, Matt writes,. The most...

Working with moku hanga, traditional Japanese woodblock printing. My mind is still reeling from the month of study I just spent at American Antiquarian Society. AAS) in Worcester, Massachusetts. Elegant portraits in pen and ink by Leslie Moore. Thursday, March 5, 2015. 4"X6" White-line Woodblock Print. I'm seeing lots of new birds here in South Georgia - egrets, ibis, turkey vultures, mockingbirds, cardinals. My favorit is the pelican. I love watching them plummet into the sea! Tuesday, May 8, 2012. Studio Open for Classes and Lessons! Though I assume most of my readers live far away from Niagara Falls, NY, where my studio is, I thought I would share information about the classes and lessons that I am now able to offer. After all, I did have a student come from Florida to study bookbinding with me a couple years ago (Hi, Dianna! And another with her daughter from Pennsylvania (Hi, Kaersten and Olivia! Rag & Bone: February 2015

One artist's journey through the valley of Printmaking. Friday, February 27, 2015. Yet More Superb Starling and The Hunt For Iridescence. You're probably thinking that I'm beating this poor old Starling print to death, but I wanted to share a few new things I learned on the way to finally getting an iridescent Superb Starling. I had tried everything from soup to nuts including several different inks, mixing mica with the ink, mixing gold powder in the ink, chine colléing (is that a verb? A little difficu...

One artist's journey through the valley of Printmaking. Tuesday, August 20, 2013. Flags Are Finally Flying High. Here's a close up of them all in a row. And that hubby's comment as, "Not a good idea." It probably wasn't, but they're up now! Besides, nothing I have ever done that had the tiniest degree of risk involved ever elicited anything other than, "Not a good idea".). ChociBlog: May 2012

http://chociblog.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html

Thursday, May 24, 2012. Busy in the studio. I don't think anything makes me more happy lately than losing track of time spent in my studio. Yesterday I had a marathon canvas prep session and now have eight canvases of various sizes ready to paint – so satisfying. but you know what's even more so? Actually sitting at the easel working on a new painting, like I did today. This little guy is finished and will be headed to Syracuse in the fall as part of my showing in The Other New York. Not Here, Not Now.

Wednesday, July 4, 2012. Echo Art Fair 2012. My gosh, surely it can't be that one month has already passed since my last post? Time sure does fly when you're busy having fun. Since then I celebrated my birthday, made lots of new paintings, and sold the one I featured in my last post! I had a lovely studio visit with a new collector who is quite discerning – at 91 years old she has collected a but handful of artworks, and "knows what she likes and doesn't care what anyone else thinks! As yet untitled) a.
