Oh no we don’t! November 30, 2009 at 9:38 am · Filed under Avoided deforestation. The pantomime season is approaching fast, and seemingly kicked off with this piece on the BBC’s Countryfile. Programme last Sunday, in which Tom Heap explored the intriguing question of why burning trees is better for the environment than many think . Subsequent media coverage has quoted the support of a number of conservation bodies, including ourselves, for the Forestry Commission. The Trust believes that woodfuel. We als...

Restoring traditional orchards in Gloucestershire: August 2009
http://charingworthorchardtrust.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html
Saturday, August 15, 2009. Local orchards and old maps. I found an image of the 1889 ordnance survey map that shows both the Portabello orchard (see August 4th post) and Mount Pleasant (August 10th post). Proof that there have been orchards on these sites for at least 120 years! Look at the hedgerows we've lost since then too. Posted by Henry Johnson. Visiting interesting traditional orchards. Prior's Tipple, an old orchard cider. It's very nice (not too sweet). On the back it reads:. There are several f...

Restoring traditional orchards in Gloucestershire: February 2010

Sunday, February 28, 2010. 38 trees pruned, 12 to go! This sequence shows Isaac. Helping me tackle a tree that we thought was in danger of splitting down its trunk. It had become very spreading, with a large weight of wood a long way from the crown. The trunk appeared to have a clear weak point as well. The blue trees have been pruned by Issac and myself in the last few weeks. The five pink trees were pruned by my friends during the pruning party. Posted by Henry Johnson. Tuesday, February 23, 2010.

Saturday, April 3, 2010. Pave over paradise to put up a parking lot? Wold's End orchard, Chipping Campden. Wold's End orchard is close to the centre of my beautiful local town, Chipping Campden. Over the last 30 years this orchard has been at the heart of an argument that has polarised opinion in the town. The land is owned by The Campden Society. The Campden Society is established for the public benefit for the following purposes (bold my own):. 1 To secure the protection. Wold's End orchard is a rare e...

Restoring traditional orchards in Gloucestershire: July 2010

Tuesday, July 20, 2010. Pump up the bramley - sky lanterns, fire and elderflower champagne. Last weekend I had a party in the 1920s orchard at Charingworth. I invited the people I work with in the market garden and a few other friends and orchard helpers. Three of the guests were cider-makers so we were well supplied with cider and perry, and also got to try out my elderflower champagne. A bit like me I hear you say? A cheeky tribe of scrumpers, armed and dangerous! Everyone knows that there is nothing q...

Thursday, July 30, 2009. Visiting other traditional orchards. Every week or so I plan to visit another local old orchard to get a feel for the diversity of fruit varieties, the biodiversity, and the distribution, age and condition of traditional orchards in this area. Each new orchard I visit will be featured in a post on the blog. This perry pear tree would make many an oak cower in shame. It reminds me of one of the trees. Posted by Henry Johnson.
