MEMOIRS OF A LEAH: 2/1/12 - 3/1/12

MEMOIRS OF A LEAH. February 22, 2012. It's Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas (2010). Another thing we did to get ready for Christmas was to decorate "Grandma's" tree. My mother-in-law's tradition is that the youngest member of the family gets to put the star on the tree so here is our attempt at getting Jaren to do so. It was a fun night. Stay tuned for more shots of everyone. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Its Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas (2010).

Saturday, December 28, 2013. Best of 2013: Number 11. I started naming an 11th best film two years ago. The idea was to reserve a special recognition for mass-market popcorn films of high quality that failed to make the final cut. For example, past winners include 2011's Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol and 2012's Skyfall. And magically landing exactly where he needs to be. It's essentially 2012 without the cheesy acting. And having enjoyed it so thoroughly. But it's an indie movie," I said to myself...

Wednesday, July 23, 2014. Movie Review: 'Wish I Was Here' is no 'Garden State'. Note: This review was first published during the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. Wish I Was Here. But his fans jumped on board, and now the question is whether "Wish I Was Here" delivers their money's worth. Aidan gets hit with another blow in the form of his ailing father (Homeland's Mandy Patinkin) whose cancer has returned and spread throughout his body. Their relationship is strained, with Patinkin's character incessantl...

Sunday, September 21, 2014. Movie Review: 'This is Where I Leave You' leaves you wishing for more. This is Where I Leave You is not a particularly good movie. It relies on a cloying sentimentality, arbitrary conflict and leaves much of its significant potential wasted. And yet, it is not unenjoyable viewing, largely due to the incredible talent of its assembled cast that paradoxically leads to unattainable expectations. And so the Altman children gather: namely eldest son Paul (Stoll) and his child-starv...

Wood's Stock: Movie Review: 'Expendables 3' walks (and detonates) familar ground

Saturday, August 16, 2014. Movie Review: 'Expendables 3' walks (and detonates) familar ground. I don't remember a single plot point from the original Expendables movie. I can't tell you who the antagonist was or what conflict our team of mercenaries fought to resolve. I remember that Mickey Rourke was in it for all of five minutes and that there was something about a woman who needed saving. Kicking. With his foot. In that regard I say "Bravo" Mr. Stallone, for giving us a piece of. For our third adventu...

Thursday, June 19, 2014. Movie Review: Jersey Boys. Different storytelling mediums have their advantages and disadvantages, obviously. Live theater is an intimate affair, giving the audience a story they can reach out and touch while film trades it's two-dimensionality for a larger production scale freed from the confines of a dimly-lit stage. Jersey Boys' follows the creation of the Four Seasons from their humble beginnings as petty criminals-cum-crooners in Newark, New Jersey through their rise to fame...

Friday, March 28, 2014. My Breakfast: The Taco Waffle. I can probably count on one hand the times that I've been to Taco Bell, but something about the recent ad campaign for its new line of breakfast items had a Pavlovian effect on me. I love waffles. I love when meat and waffles are combined. Taco Waffles, you say? I had to have one. I honestly don't know how to judge mouth feel, suffice it to say that there was nothing patently objectionable about the experience of chewing and swallowing the Waffle Taco.

Monday, November 18, 2013. My Life Online: Shadow World. Two weeks ago I took a trip to New York for some graduate school shopping and while I was there I stopped in at the Museum of Sex, affectionately referred to as MoSex (Mo' Problems, amirite? Neither did I) which focuses mostly on the more atypical habits in nature, such as male sea horses giving birth, ubiquitous self-gratification among primates and Roy and Silo. Sidenote: perhaps the 2014 sequel to My Life Online should be my adventures with an i...

Wednesday, May 28, 2014. Movie Review: A Million Ways to Die in the West. But despite being a truly prolific talent in Hollywood, his sophomore directorial feature A Million Ways To Die in the West. Is the first time audiences will have a chance to see MacFarlane on the big screen, in corporeal form, in a starring role. And true to form, MacFarlane sticks the landing. West is at its best when it's focused around Albert and Anna, and loses steam when it drifts toward the secondary characters. Giovanni...
