Wookiebikers cycling blog

Racing and traing blog of a CAT 3/Masters cyclist. Thursday, July 17, 2014. Well, I think everybody dodged a bullet weather wise for this race. Heading to the staging area in my car, I saw a lightening bolt off in the distance (probably 10 miles away from the start line). I could also see rain in the area, but where I was at it was dry. All told it was 11.3 miles with about 2100 feet of climbing. I ended up 2nd in my category and 10th fastest time overall . not a bad day for a bigger racer. After that I ...

Wookiebikers cycling blog: Kings Valley Road Race

http://wookiebiker.blogspot.com/2014/04/kings-valley-road-race.html

Racing and traing blog of a CAT 3/Masters cyclist. Sunday, April 13, 2014. Kings Valley Road Race. Had my first road race in two years yesterday . Kings Valley Road Race. I've had success there in the past with a 3rd place finish, but also got crashed out two years ago when I lost my custom Tsunami. Last week at the group ride a teammate told me If I go race, he'd go race . so, I figured what the heck, at a minimum a good training race with some intensity. Anyway . a little road racing every now and ...

Wookiebikers cycling blog: As the Raven Flies ... But Longer

http://wookiebiker.blogspot.com/2014/04/as-raven-flies-but-longer.html

Racing and traing blog of a CAT 3/Masters cyclist. Monday, April 28, 2014. As the Raven Flies . But Longer. This was the earliest I've raced a 40k (actually around 39.5k) and given that a lot of my training takes place on my commute to work, so no extended periods of threshold work, I wasn't sure how I would fair over the longer distance. Overall . road conditions were not an issue, but I knew there were sections where 50 mph in the aero bars were possible, which opens up a new set of "Oh Crap" issues.

Wookiebikers cycling blog: March 2014

http://wookiebiker.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

Racing and traing blog of a CAT 3/Masters cyclist. Thursday, March 27, 2014. Since my crash at Revenge of the Disc #2 last year, I've been riding on a damaged disc and knew I couldn't use it any longer when the crack started getting bigger. Knowing another Flo wheel order was coming up I thought I'd take my chances for a disc. I emailed the owners to see how many "Clydesdale" discs they would have in this order and they let me know they had 17 of those and 100 total discs. Sunday, March 2, 2014. With tha...

Wookiebikers cycling blog: June 2014

http://wookiebiker.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Racing and traing blog of a CAT 3/Masters cyclist. Monday, June 16, 2014. Mary's Peak Hill Climb. This was my first year racing the Mary's Peak Hill Climb. It's part of the Oregon TT Cup series and I already missed a race, so I wanted to give this race a shot this year. I knew it was going to be tough, but I've been losing weight and thought it would give me a good overall idea of where my fitness is at. The start of the race is flat for about 100 meters then goes up! Once you hit the top of the steeper ...

Busted Helmet: Rocky Lied - Banana Belt #3

http://bustedhelmet.blogspot.com/2011/03/rocky-lied-banana-belt-3.html

Musings of cycling and other stuff. Sunday, March 27, 2011. Rocky Lied - Banana Belt #3. Everyone thinks if they just tried just a little harder. but it's a mind trick. The body only has what it has, and if it's not enough to keep from being dropped, it's not enough. Rocky lied to us. In the end, if you don't have the ability, you don't have the ability, no matter the state of "heart". If only (if only! I had hung on up that hill the second lap. If only (if only! Musings of cycling and other stuff. Saturday, December 12, 2009. Athlete Types - Joe Friel. Http:/ www.trainingbible.com/joesblog/2008/08/athlete-types.html. Mr Friel, in the article above, outlines three different athlete types: artist-athletes, scientist-athletes, and accountant-athletes. It's an interesting article because I can see people who trend these various directions on the team. For the four full weeks of December, with one week nearly over, here's the idea:. Week 4: same as week 2, but with a...

Busted Helmet: December 2010

http://bustedhelmet.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

Musings of cycling and other stuff. Thursday, December 30, 2010. I had a pretty good season last year (or rather, for another day at least, this year). The one thing that put a damper on it all was my performance with cyclocross. I was terrible. Cornering was my a-specialty. So, instead of eyeing the corner, translating that into a center, and translate it back to a radius to follow on the bike, why not just actually follow the corner? Tuesday, December 14, 2010. A Bit of a New Direction. A powermeter is...

Busted Helmet: November 2010

Musings of cycling and other stuff. Tuesday, November 16, 2010. Stone Soup (or how a little here and a little there wins a BAR). I never peaked, just kinda keep getting slowly stronger as the year progressed. Basically I raced my way into shape. Old school, I guess. And hills are still mynemesis. I couldn't lose weight. Musings of cycling and other stuff. Thursday, July 30, 2009. Cascade. and the end of the season. Because I didn't blow myself up trying to move from 92nd place to 80th, I actually finished the stage feeling pretty good. I was one of the first to go off for the ITT in the Cat 3 field because of my near lanterne rouge. The crit was uneventful. I got a great start and was in the top 20 or so in the field for the first few laps. Then it went like this:. Getting passed - PUSH IT! The second circuit went the s...

Musings of cycling and other stuff. Monday, August 24, 2009. Http:/ www.flickr.com/photos/. Jeff Harwood from Ironclad and I cleaned up in the Cat5's on the track at the Team Beer Race at Alpenrose. We ended up tying for first, with the tie-break going to Jeff because he beat me in the final race of the omnium. Whatever happened, I felt absolutely comfortable out there racing. Fun, for a change, instead of nerve racking. Next stop: Cat 4. And match sprints. I can't wait! Friday, August 21, 2009. In any c...

Busted Helmet: March 2010

http://bustedhelmet.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Musings of cycling and other stuff. Tuesday, March 30, 2010. March is the season of the spring classics here in Oregon, primarily populated by one, three week race series called the Banana Belts. Don't ask; I have no idea why the name. There are bananas on the registration table when you sign in, but the course does not resemble anything like a banana. Racing is every Sunday for three consecutive weeks. You get within sight of the finish and it's a game of chicken to see who jumps first. Fourth wheel...

Somewhere in Between

Sunday, 29 December 2013. I felt like I aged so much the last few years. And in the blink of an eye, the year is changing again. I started writing a decade ago, and started the blog in Oct 2004, also almost a decade ago. Who in their right mind could have believed this? The blog has helped tremendously, in terms of emotional and mental strength. I believe I grew wiser and have changed to become a better person. Posted by Ewok at 3:46 pm. Monday, 16 December 2013.
