In the 1950's, Woonsocket residents had a choice of six movie theaters. On Cumberland Street was the Laurier Theater. On North Main Street was the Park Theater (formerly the Woonsocket Opera House). On Main Street was the Bijou. The Rialto (formerly Lynch's Theater). The Olympia and the Stadium. Today, only the Stadium Theatre remains. Thanks to the work of the Stadium Theatre Foundation, the theater has been beautifully restored by the John Canning Painting and Conservation Studios. Woonsocket, RI 02895.

It took on a distinctive new look in the 1920's with the construction of several important buildings including the Stadium Theatre Building and the Union St. Jean-Baptiste Building. Woonsocket's Original Mill Villages. The City of Woonsocket was formed in 1888 from six mill villages. Which grew up along the Blackstone River in the area around the Woonsocket Falls. Five of these villages - Social, Jenckesville, Hamlet, Bernon and Globe - originally clustered around the mills of one company. The sixth and largest, Woonsocket Falls, contained the mills of several companies huddled together. The Woonsocket Falls Village occupied most of what is now downtown Woonsocket. Market Square.
