September 2016 – wordofmoth
https://wordofmothblog.wordpress.com/2016/09
Mothing from the very beginning …. Autumn colours – a coda. Awakening to moths and more …. Portland Ribbon Wave … again. Now you see me, now you don’t…. Portland Ribbon Wave … again. It’s been a very busy few weeks and I’ve not been doing much trapping. However, I set the trap on the night of 5th September and enjoyed a bustling posse of moths, due in part to the very warm, muggy weather – a minimum of 20C and humid. To a previous post. Meanwhile, as well as trapping in the garden, Matt, Derek and I enjo...

Mothing from the very beginning …. Autumn colours – a coda. Awakening to moths and more …. Portland Ribbon Wave … again. Now you see me, now you don’t…. Now you see me, now you don’t…. Apparently, dissection has long shown that the hind wings are passively coupled to the front wings which are muscled up to provide the motive power. Cut off the forewings and the moth is going nowhere! 8230; think moss and lichen. 8230; surely just twigs? 8230; just a yellowing leaf? Many species have two generations as we...

Mothing from the very beginning …. Autumn colours – a coda. Awakening to moths and more …. Portland Ribbon Wave … again. Now you see me, now you don’t…. This weekend I stumbled across one such guide; the excellent website for fauna in Nottinghamshire ‘Eakringbirds.com’. As well as stunning photos of a wide range of fauna, they have a month-by-month guide for moths (surely a good basis for introducing beginners to it all) and this lovely guide to the. And, today, Clouded Drab (. Here they all are together:.

Mothing from the very beginning …. Autumn colours – a coda. Awakening to moths and more …. Portland Ribbon Wave … again. Now you see me, now you don’t…. It’s still high summer but the first few signs that Autumn will soon be on its way are starting to appear. Blackberries are ripening and the oak tree behind our garden has a few leaves beginning to turn on it. The first has two generations whilst the other three have only one. Two things to note here: firstly, the lunar mark which is still there but with...

Mothing from the very beginning …. Autumn colours – a coda. Awakening to moths and more …. Portland Ribbon Wave … again. Now you see me, now you don’t…. Autumn colours – a coda. Like buses, I don’t manage a post for a month and then two come along at once (1). Having mentioned the Autumnal colours of my recent catches, matching, like the Angle Shades above, the turning leaves turn on the trees, into the trap last night came this fabulous Green-brindled Crescent. Orcombe Point, Mudbank and other stuff. Orcombe - the patch. Monday, 31 August 2015. I've been away with the family since early Friday so was keen to get out on Orcombe late this afternoon. I checked the eastern fringes of the patch that border Sandy Bay as this was where the best sunny spots seemed to be. There appeared to be plenty of migrants around so I'm a bit gutted I was unable to get out this morning. Birds seen included 1 Wryneck. And 10 Yellow Wagtail. Thursday, 27 August 2015. I was familiar w...

Orcombe Point, Mudbank and other stuff. Orcombe - the patch. Orcombe - the patch. I do much of my birding on Orcombe Point during spring and autumn but rarely cover it in the winter and summer. I love it because it is not a 'prime' site and consequently I often have it to myself. The majority of sea-watching is done from the raised bank below the beach huts as it usually affords some degree of shelter. This also overlooks Maer rocks that can be good for gulls and sometimes waders. This is the public foot...

Orcombe Point, Mudbank and other stuff. Orcombe - the patch. Thursday, 6 August 2015. Breed just round the corner on Straight Point but opportunities to photograph them are few and far between, so 3 juveniles joining the black-head flock this morning were very welcome. That said, they never got. Close and the early morning light was awful so my photos are typically crap. There were at least 7 Mediterranean Gulls. With the Black-headed Gulls. And 1 Ringed Plover. I reckon there are quite a few up there.

Orcombe Point, Mudbank and other stuff. Orcombe - the patch. Friday, 14 August 2015. An absolutely foul morning with torrential rain throughout. We're not blessed with hides in Exmouth so I got soaked. Some Lesser Black-backed Gull. Movement evident today with 5 by the Lifeboat station where there are normally none. Just c10 Common Tern. Offshore there this morning. The estuary off Mudbank/Imperial was the best place again with 16 Bar-tailed Godwit. With a few House Martin. Dawlish Warren Latest Sightings.
birdingexmouth: Pyrausta aurata
http://gobirdingexmouth.blogspot.com/2015/08/pyrausta-aurata.html
Orcombe Point, Mudbank and other stuff. Orcombe - the patch. Tuesday, 4 August 2015. Pyrausta aurata is a common enough micro, often found day-flying, but I don't routinely find them in the trap. This one posed for its photo - a beautiful little moth. It has prompted me to start thinking about working on my 'micros' list - something I've neglected for far too long. Not much else in the trap this morning but Small Square-spot was the first I've seen this summer, as was Purple Bar. Birding the day away!
birdingexmouth: Orcombe Migrants
http://gobirdingexmouth.blogspot.com/2015/08/orcombe-migrants.html
Orcombe Point, Mudbank and other stuff. Orcombe - the patch. Saturday, 15 August 2015. Two Green Sandpipers were the pick of today's migrants. They're not even annual on Orcombe. I think this is my fourth record but I should really check. There seems to be a 'crap photo of high-flying sandpipers' theme developing here. Today's Orcombe totals include 6 Willow Warbler. And 2 Green Sandpiper. This constitutes quite a reasonable tally for Orcombe. A single Kestrel. And 3 Little Tern. Birding the day away!

Word of Moss | The word on Advocacy Marketing & PR
The word on Advocacy Marketing and PR. 2015 The year to Open Hearts. February 1, 2015 by wordofmoss. The challenge of course is how you ‘Open Hearts’ in a world of cynicism. A world where nothing a brand says is taken at face-value. Where a customer’s search for the true meaning can so easily give rise to myth or abandonment. Where the words of others have more impact than a brands own. 3 Align every action don’t build a façade in front of the real you (your business). Find and enshrine a red thread.
