Words all Around

Saturday, 20 June 2015. For no known reason, on Friday I was thinking about runcible spoons, as I pottered in the garden. I thought I remembered that the word runcible. Was a nonsense invention by Edward Lear. I had been on a 'weed walk' led by Adam Grubb, and had bought a copy of his book The Weed Forager's Handbook. But I don't see why that should have got me musing about runcible spoons. Anyway.today I was browsing Adam's book and came to the page about Sow Thistles. We have lots of this weed. To me t...

Words all Around: December 2014

http://wordsallaround.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 17 December 2014. How many cardinal compass points are there? I wonder why we have four points on the compass. I suppose it comes from the idea of 'in front', ' behind', ' left' and 'right', and is mandated by the shape of our bodies. I wrote yesterday about the book You Call It Desert - We Used to Live There. Written byPat Lowe with Jimmy Pike. It's about what is now known as The Great Sandy Desert, in inland Australia. The great sandy desert. You call it desert - we used to live there. It's ...

Friday, 22 August 2014. Names of the waterways under and in London. I just followed a link to a fascinating article. About how many of the rivers and creeks of London got their names. It reminded me how eagerly I'm awaiting the next novel in Ben Aaronovitch's fantasy series. Londonist.com reviews the first novel. As lacking believability, but gives it the thumbs-up as a cracking good read in terms of action and interest. Sunday, 10 August 2014. Is the Latin word. I love to see language used so creatively.

Words all Around: How many seasons in Australia?

http://wordsallaround.blogspot.com/2014/12/how-many-seasons-in-australia.html

Tuesday, 16 December 2014. How many seasons in Australia? Recently I've been reading an interesting book about the seasons in Australia - Sprinter and Sprummer. It made me realise that Australian conditions don't fit the seasonal template developed for Britain, the USA and Europe. The author, Timothy Entwisle, says indigenous cultures in this continent divided the year in different ways, many having six seasons, some five, and at least one only four seasons. These are two books to show modern Australians...

Saturday, 24 August 2013. Gorgeous plates with strange grammar. I recently bought some lovely plates. They are just the right size to serve a salad and their bright decoration makes me feel cheerful. Each one has a message written on it about the uses of olives in cooking. I wonder if the designer has English as her second language? The messages use language in an off-key way. For instance, here's what it says on the box:. Olive oil's uses in gastronomy are immense.'. And one of the plates has this:.

Textile arts and crafts in Oz: November 2009

http://textileartsandcraftsinoz.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Textile arts and crafts in Oz. A foray into the world of textiles and the ups and downs of living a creative life. Monday, November 30, 2009. Look what I got. yes a very good friend, reading my blog about getting back into creating, promptly busted her stash and delivered me a series of silk painting trays, frames, books and. For the day was quickly sorted, or reshuffled on the list. If not, then maybe I can jump straight to the more exotic processes like, wet on wet, salt tossing and marbling! As a pers...

Textile arts and crafts in Oz. A foray into the world of textiles and the ups and downs of living a creative life. Thursday, October 22, 2009. Tapestry weaving is a very ancient craft. Pieces of weaving have been recorded as far back as the Coptic period. Small pieces of tapestry weaving were created as decorative inserts on plain cloth woven for clothing. There are few full production art houses currently in operation across the world. In Australia we are lucky to have the Victorian Tapestry Workshop.

Textile arts and crafts in Oz. A foray into the world of textiles and the ups and downs of living a creative life. Monday, April 29, 2013. I feel rather daunted wwriting a blog without any pictures. Though I have been working on several projects and happily observing progress I have totally forgotten to record these with my camera! Links to this post. Saturday, April 20, 2013. my dog: dogs and vegemite

http://mydog-parlance.blogspot.com/2015/05/dogs-and-vegemite.html

My dog - Life with Penny. Thursday, 21 May 2015. Penny could have told Jimmie Fallon how to eat vegemite on toast, without seeing Hugh Jackman do so. She, like any true-blue Aussie dog, loves her toast with vegemite. (Or peanut butter, for that matter.). Even if her humans are miserly with the bread. (Bread isn't really good for her.) That's her teensy piece on the edge of the plate. Today, it was the hind legs raise that got the tiny reward. 21 May 2015 at 19:16. Love ya lots♥. 21 May 2015 at 19:39.

my dog: The mystery circle explained

http://mydog-parlance.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-mystery-circle-explained.html

My dog - Life with Penny. Thursday, 16 July 2015. The mystery circle explained. Long, long ago. Penny and I were mystified by a circle of dead grass that appeared in a local park. We did figure eventually that the grass had been sprayed in order to prepare the spot for an indigenous planting. And now the planting is flourishing. It's a pity that they probably used a horrible, dangerous herbicide. Lassiter Chase and Benjamin. Glad aliens didnt make that circle. 17 July 2015 at 11:37. 18 July 2015 at 16:26.

my dog: dogs and aloe vera

http://mydog-parlance.blogspot.com/2012/03/dogs-and-aloe-vera.html

My dog - Life with Penny. Saturday, 10 March 2012. Dogs and aloe vera. After my recent post. About using aloe vera on Penny's feet, Lassiter Chase's mum. Posted a comment saying she was glad to read that licking off aloe vera won't hurt a dog. I started to worry that I hadn't done enough research for my last post. I did read that aloe vera is safe, and I'm trying it on Penny's feet, but I only looked at the one site I mentioned. So I've looked around further and this is what I've found:. But taking aloe ...

my dog: pet food with carrageenan in it - is it too dangerous?

http://mydog-parlance.blogspot.com/2015/08/pet-food-with-carrageenan-in-it-is-it.html

My dog - Life with Penny. Sunday, 9 August 2015. Pet food with carrageenan in it - is it too dangerous? Long ago, someone pointed out to me that our favourite canned pet food has carrageenan in it, and said that ingredient is reported to be carcinogenic. I decided not to worry about it, because I thought ZiwiPeak. The brand I'm talking about, is ethically produced. However, today I was reading a report by a cardiologist about carrageena. In researching this post I found they don't include it any more.

my dog: is roundup - glyphosate - safe to use around dogs?

http://mydog-parlance.blogspot.com/2010/05/is-roundup-glyphosate-safe-to-use.html

My dog - Life with Penny. Sunday, 23 May 2010. Is roundup - glyphosate - safe to use around dogs? A recent article in Organic Gardener magazine. About glyphosate (Roundup), has me wondering about this herbicide in terms of its danger to dogs. I have two concerns (apart from my general concern about the environment). First, I believe this is the herbicide that is used in Darebin Parklands. Where we walk frequently. I don't like to use this product in my own garden, so it bothers me that Penny is likely to...

my dog: Penny stayed home today

http://mydog-parlance.blogspot.com/2015/08/penny-stayed-home-today.html

My dog - Life with Penny. Wednesday, 5 August 2015. Penny stayed home today. Penny didn't come with me today when I walked in one of our favourite spots, near the confluence of the Merri Creek and the Yarra River. Long ago, I sort of complained. That we had been banned from entering our number one top-favorite, most loved swimming spot. I'm glad that a short time later I. This week is Wurundjeri Week. The Wurundjeri. Reflections of A Honest Hypocrite. | Musings of my Soul.

Reflections of A Honest Hypocrite. Musings of my Soul. Looney Tunes Writing Prompt. August 6, 2015. You wake up one morning and find yourself inside a Looney Tunes cartoon with a burning desire to hunt down a certain Bugs Bunny, no matter the cost. What happens next? I wake with the sun’s debut as the rays sneakily evade the cabin through dark blinds. I hear birds singing their sweet morning songs a little too close to my window. I consider telling them to shove off. Or I will stuff them. When I see him.
