Workshop on the Water

Workshop on the Water. Wednesday, July 9, 2014. The first step, gravity being what it is, was to turn her over so the soon-to-be-glassed bottom is accessible for epoxy coating and glassing. The crew stands by the boat in slings. Jeff is planning. Lower the hoist on the portside, and raise it on starboard. Charles gives her a final push. And, down she goes. Bob finishes up the torpedo tail frame. Tube in background will be the body. Dave and Larry tighten some screws. In New Jersey and installed last week.

http://workshoponthewater.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html

Workshop on the Water. Saturday, December 21, 2013. The Workshop on the Water is nicely decorated for the holiday season with a Christmas tree, garland, and assorted trim, and played host last weekend to "Santa's Workshop on the Water." You can read more about the event and see some pictures at the WoW Facebook page. Tree and garland beside clamps and sawdust. Strongback construction is underway. Cross bracing was added. Workshop on the Water: Life after the skiffs

http://workshoponthewater.blogspot.com/2014/06/life-after-skiffs.html

Workshop on the Water. Friday, June 6, 2014. Life after the skiffs. On schedule, the four Harbormaster Skiffs made it out of the shop and onto the floating dock, where they received their final touch ups of bottom paint and a bit more Sikaflex. They were launched with great ceremony last week, and now are tied up in the basin and available for rowing. The shop has a LOT more room than it had a few weeks ago, but we will fill it up quickly. On a rainy, gray day, the boats await launching. This week, Jeff ...

Workshop on the Water: Good Smells

http://workshoponthewater.blogspot.com/2014/05/good-smells.html

Workshop on the Water. Friday, May 2, 2014. The four skiffs are really close to completion. Dave, Jen, and the kids finished installing knees and thwart risers, and also added a second coat of Tung oil to the interiors. The exteriors are all filled, sanded, and awaiting paint. Thwarts are being fitted, and oars are being made. A transom knee braces the transom to the sheer strake. Jen holds a thwart riser in place while Dave tightens a clamp. Fine tuning a thwart template with a joggle stick. The old san...

Workshop on the Water: April 2013

http://workshoponthewater.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html

Workshop on the Water. Friday, April 12, 2013. Whaleboat number one is right side up again, and is pretty much complete. The key word is pretty, we think. She has the beautiful lines of her ancestors, and the meticulous fit and finish done by WoW craftsmen as accustomed to building sailing yachts as rough and ready workboats. With her white hull, ISM blue sheer strake, and dark grey gunwales, she looks simply fantastic. From the bow . . . Amidships . . . Jeff checks the fit of the chine on the port side.

Workshop on the Water: November 2013

http://workshoponthewater.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html

Workshop on the Water. Saturday, November 23, 2013. A big space has been cleared at the front of the shop for students in the ongoing SAILOR Program. Every Wednesday, the floor is filled with white painted plywood lofting boards, as the kids learn to transfer boat designs from plans to full size patterns. The program is still gearing up, and more groups are scheduled to start soon. Some more oak frames-to-be steam in preparation for bending. Bob M contemplates his next move. Work has turned to the engine...

Building wooden masts and other spars.

http://www.woodboatbuilder.com/pages/elf_spars.html

All of the spars we are building in this run will be of eight-stave birds mouth construction. We begin by cutting the staves to their widest dimension on the table saw then joining them with a slash scarf joint to make up the required length for each spar. The joints are roughed on a band saw then finished in a router jig and glued together on a bench. Send comments and questions to info@woodboatbuilder.com.
