Wednesday, April 1, 2015. A few weeks ago while out in the bush processing some Fatwood I realized that my small personal draw saw and my Hultafors Classic Axe just werent the best tools for the job. . The folding draw saw is great for small limbs and more precise work. Its lightweight and pack ability make it a great tool for almost every job. However, processing larger limbs which are infused with high amounts of resin tend to slow the process dramatically. . Wednesday, April 01, 2015. 3 Day Winter Sur...

Friday, January 16, 2015. Light My Fire - Fire Knife. After the surprising results of the Tinder on a Rope evaluation I was eager to see if Light My Fire was for real. There is no doubt that Light My Fire is a very successful product designer and manufacturer of camping use gear. However, this success rarely translates into the type of equipment which can be trusted in a survival emergency. Rubberized sure grip handle. Simple yet functional resin sheath. High quality Scout Fire Steel. Subscribe to: Post ...

Beyond The Fire: November 2013

Saturday, November 23, 2013. Don't ever pass by these two items! Often times while we are travelling through the bush enjoying our favourite outdoor passion we forget to pause and take stock of what surrounds us. Mother nature provides us with everything we could ever need to survive whether it be fire, shelter, water, food, signalling or first aid. So as I paused to enjoy the natural growth of these life saving materials I realized they deserved a blog post. The 2nd material is simply dried grasses....

Friday, December 20, 2013. A Great Emergency Bush Stove. The other day while wandering through the local Canadian Tire I spotted a product that peeked my interest. I had seen them before however had never thought of testing them. I took a moment and picked the product up and was immediately engaged with the packaging claims. So for $8.99 I thought it was well worth the risk. Within 15 minutes I was pleasantly surprised to see the melted snow boiling as clean water. It was a strong rolling boiling cap...

Beyond The Fire: March 2015

Tuesday, March 24, 2015. The old saying that practice makes perfect is a great teaching methodology. However, any good sporting coaching will quickly correct that by stating that practice doesn't make perfect - rather perfect practice makes perfect. It is from the failures that we will gain knowledge and experience so very crucial to our very survival. Whether experiencing different shelter designs, using different bow drill materials, attempting to use primitive trapping methods or simply by using diffe...

Monday, April 15, 2013. InstaFlam Field Testing Part I. A few weeks ago I received an email from Derek Trott who is the VP of Sales for a company called Ramagex based out of Quebec. Derek had visited the Beyond the Fire website and felt that he had a product that was perfect for our School. The product was called "Instaflam" which he described as an environmentally friendly fire starter that instantly lights when wet. Well, for those who know us here at BTF you know that begs to be field tested. I then t...

Thursday, February 26, 2015. During a recent course I was instructing on one of the students pointed out that everywhere I went I carried a backpack. Several of them joked about what they might find if they looked inside. Some of the ideas were incredibly entertaining. After some ribbing and a reminder from me about how I was in charge of their level of suffering over the next 8 days they got serious and asked what I carried. The 5 'C's' of Survival. Thursday, February 26, 2015. What's your favourite pri...

Friday, February 22, 2013. The Wilderness Solutions Fire Piston. Recently I stumbled across a website for the company Wilderness Solutions located in New York. The company specializes in Primitive Fire making tools, supplies and instruction. As with all ordered products the wait is always the worse part. However, when the tidy brown box arrived I ripped into as if it were Christmas again! Inside was the 2nd Generation Fire Piston and a ziplock baggy of rolled char cloth. With small piece of char cloth.
