Working with rural Mayans to improve family health. When their region’s coffee industry collapsed, most highland Q’eqchi’ people were left with subsistence farming of corn as their only sure source of food. As a result, these families now have among the highest rates of malnutrition and maternal mortality in the world. Many illnesses and fatalities could be quite easily prevented, but in the mountainous - often inaccessible - villages, health services and resources are scarce to non-existent.
