Writing the Past: March 2014

http://writingthepastblog.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

Ancient and Medieval History and Historical Fiction. Thursday, March 27, 2014. The Triumph of Herakles. Some of the most timeless stories in western literature are about the heroes of ancient Greece. For millennia people have been inspired by Perseus, Jason and the Argonauts, Theseus, Achilles and Odysseus. Many an ancient king and warrior has tried to emulate the actions and personae of these heroes, and even claimed descent from them. Far and away, the greatest hero of all was Herakles. Herakles was bo...

Writing the Past: July 2013

Ancient and Medieval History and Historical Fiction. Saturday, July 27, 2013. Paterfamilias – The Father in Roman Society. Over the past months, I’ve been editing Killing the Hydra. 8211; Eagles and Dragons Book II. It’s been enjoyable delving into a story again after having stepped away for a long time. It’s funny, but I had forgotten all the years of research that went into these books. I take for granted the world I immersed myself in to write them because now it all seems normal to me. However, after the first few episodes of the show I began to see its qualities and the wonderful ways in which it revived the Arthurian legend for a new generation.

Writing the Past: August 2013

http://writingthepastblog.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html

Ancient and Medieval History and Historical Fiction. Thursday, August 29, 2013. 8211; Bring it on! I loved the movie, Robin Hood – Prince of Thieves. There I’ve said it. You may laugh now. It’s ok. I’ve got a good set of armour on. For me that movie, Kevin Costner's accent and all, was a game changer. It gave my life some much needed direction in the confusing dark times of my early teenage years. I’ve heard Robin Hood. Was the only one to garner any respect (less so for Braveheart. Don’t get me wr...
