Sunday, August 30, 2009. Yukon River Summit 2009. One of the big things that I worked on this summer for the Yukon River Inter-tribal Watershed Council was the bi-ennial (that means every 2 years) Summit. There were many great people at the Summit sharing their knowledge and blessing us with their presence. I've tried to find some good links for them so you can get a better idea. Gone North: Water Quality

http://yukoncarmen.blogspot.com/2009/08/water-quality.html

Monday, August 17, 2009. One of the major projects that the Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council undertakes is an impressive water quality monitoring project. Maya and I got sent out when our water tech was away for a vacation. We went out to 2 locations: Tagish Lake and Marsh Lake, which are essentially wide spots of the Yukon River. We took basic WQ measurements and also prepared samples to be sent off to the USGS. A good day of work, being out on the River, in the sun! Yukon River Summit 2009.

Gone North: Two or Three Trips with Ginger

http://yukoncarmen.blogspot.com/2009/08/two-or-three-trips-with-ginger.html

Monday, August 17, 2009. Two or Three Trips with Ginger. We made it to Alaska! Fraser, BC. Canada customs post! Holly happy to be heading out from our roadside camp! Leaving Annie Lake Road in somewhat high spirits. Here's that incriminating photo. Atlin garage sale at the Festival. Picked up some good bargains here! Tiger gloves are good for sharing. Beautiful Atlin from Monarch Mountain. Dinner atop the island in Teslin Lake. Trip One: Atlin Music Festival. And "the" Colin Linden. Ginger and Brook and ...

Gone North: Visitors from Home!

http://yukoncarmen.blogspot.com/2009/08/visitors-from-home.html

Monday, August 17, 2009. Obligatory roadside bear, Haines Junction. When I asked the people at work who I looked like, they said my dad. I don't know what they are talking about ;-). Mom and I at Kathleen Lake in Kluane National Park. Super windy! QT with the 'rents. Mom and Dad at the BC/Yukon border. They hated having this picture taken, but look how cute they are! This way to Skagway! Taking a roadside break enroute to Skagway. They jumped all over that too! And she replied "It's terrible Carmen!

Gone North: An absence explained

http://yukoncarmen.blogspot.com/2009/08/absence-explained.html

Monday, August 17, 2009. It's been far too long since I updated this blog, especially for those of you who actually use it to keep track of me. My apologies but I don't have internet at home in the cabin and work was just too busy to be on the blog. It is now almost time for coming back south, so I will try to write a few quick entries on some recent experiences. Thanks for reading, I hope these next entries will explain why I love it up here so much! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Ghana 'Till September: Trials, Trees, and Travels

http://chris-in-ghana.blogspot.com/2009/06/trials-trees-and-travels.html

Tuesday, June 23, 2009. Trials, Trees, and Travels. Trials, Trees and Travels. Lots happened over the last week, so I'm going to break this up into a few sections. Normally I'd spread it over multiple posts, but I don't want to spam RSS feeds or FaceBook profiles (see, I'm considerate like that). Check it out on the original site. Because I'm not sure the newly added alt-text is going to work in FaceBook. The court house also had some pretty hilarious signage. For example:. Circling the whole time. By th...

Ghana 'Till September: May 2009

Friday, May 29, 2009. For stepping in a flower bed? Not having his papers in order? It was certainly a harrowing experience, but all is well that ends well. We didn't cave, and ended up being sent home in a taxi (without paying any fine! Just to be clear, in no way do I believe that we should have been held above the law just because we were foreigners. However, when there were other people who were walking through the grass (just ahead of us! In other news, I've officially been in Ghana for a week!

Ghana 'Till September: Barack Obama is my home boy

http://chris-in-ghana.blogspot.com/2009/07/barack-obama-is-my-home-boy.html

Wednesday, July 15, 2009. Barack Obama is my home boy. That's right, this weekend prominently featured the 44th (and 1st African-American) President of the United States (who, incidentally, is also the 1st deadly three-point assassin. In the White House). It's no secret that I'm a huge Obama-phile, so I was tremendously excited (despite being continually reminded by my American friends that he is not, in fact, MY President). People even had clothes made with Obama's face featured on the fabric's print.

Ghana 'Till September: Tro-tro!

http://chris-in-ghana.blogspot.com/2009/06/tro-tro.html

Thursday, June 18, 2009. Let me introduce you to the cornerstone of Ghanaian transportation: the tro-tro. A "tro-tro" is, essentially, a large van that has been retrofitted to seat anywhere between 14 and 20 people. It's what I use to go to and from work on a daily basis, and often my preferred mode of transportation for getting around the city. Most of them have some sort of slogan affixed to the front and the back, often religiously themed. (One of my all-time favorites: "Try Islam! At nearly every maj...

Ghana 'Till September: Cheap Chickens (or, something is a-fowl in Ghana)

http://chris-in-ghana.blogspot.com/2009/07/cheap-chickens-or-something-is-fowl-in.html

Thursday, July 9, 2009. Cheap Chickens (or, something is a-fowl in Ghana). I'm constantly surrounded by chickens. I don't mean lily-livered cowards or fraidy-cats. No, I'm talking about the birds. Poultry. Fowl. Most mornings, I wake up to the familiar sound of a rooster crowing (just like in the cartoons, except for way more annoying). Sometimes they can be bothersome (example: when I'm in court, attempting to listen to a very soft-spoken judge. Obruni = white person). Akon (He's huge here). CorpWatch -...

Monday, July 20, 2009. Ghana's Most Beautiful (or, how Chris got himself on Ghanaian TV). What do you get when you blend American Idol, a beauty pageant, and Canadian Heritage Minutes, and then transport the concoction to Ghana? Well, you'd pretty much end up with Ghana's Most Beautiful. Which airs on Sunday nights on Ghana's TV3. A bit about the show:. Ghana's Most Beautiful airs live on TV3 Sundays at 8:00pm! As Taylor) and I had no idea what type of event we would be attending. Ghana 'Till September: Got to go to Togo

http://chris-in-ghana.blogspot.com/2009/07/got-to-go-to-togo.html

Monday, July 6, 2009. Got to go to Togo. This past weekend, the crew did a little border-hop over to Togo, Ghana's French-speaking eastern neighbor. Part of the reason for the trip was visa-related (with a multiple entry visa, it's common to briefly leave the country and then gain a new immigration stamp upon reentry; it's basically like restarting the shot clock). Once I confronted him about the deception, he reluctantly gave me the correct amount. Again, there was some pretty smooth scamming . we w...
